The fate of 1976 ANA special coin sets.

The US Mint assembled 10,000 special coin sets for sale at the 1976 ANA Convention. Many were not sold and the certificate shown below describes their fate.

This set was posted on Cointalk by 'bigjpst' on January 25, 2012.

Does anyone have a set to show?

That is a Bicentennial medal set, not the US Mint coins.

Gotta believe a lot of the silver pieces were melted c. 1979.

Wow, looks like they didn't allow much time to pass before they decided it was not in favor. Peace Roy

The certificate says the pieces were destroyed April 19, 1977, not that the sets were broken up then.

Other correspondence states that the sets were made only for sale at the ANA convention. Thus, there was no after-market.

Melting makes collectibles! All of the gold and silver returned to bar form makes everything that survives much more scarce.

Thanks for the added information from your January thread. I was not aware of it when I opened this one. Glad to see you are going to acquire a 5th set.

I can understand the remarks on your Jan thread about it possibly being an after market set. The overall packaging and presentation is distinctly "economical."

FYI: As a Peace dollar enthusiast, I often search these forums for "Peace". Lately, 9 out of 10 results find your signature of "Peace Roy". Could you change it to "Morgan Roy" or "WLH Roy"?

Just having fun, and not really serious ;)

Can you do a Boolian search such as : Peace_ NOT Peace_Roy ?

    Thanks for the info.

I almost started a thread on an apparent ratcheting up of demand for regular souvenir sets and the various special souvenir sets the other day. Prices have firmed considerably and the only possible explanation is that they are being collected by date and type.

Many of these sets were made in quite small quantities and have a very high attrition.

While regular mint set quality is better the packaging isn't stable so collecting them by date is in most instances unwise. The souvenir set packaging is relatively stable. I have a couple of these sets and both are OK for now.

I recall seeing a couple of these at shows in the PNW when I lived there. Did not buy one... Cheers, RickO

Jc101 thanks for noticing. I am a decorated disabled Vietnam veteran (69-72). Peace means a lot to me. I am grateful for my life today. Have a good day. Peace Roy
