I am not able to view the videos at work, but I think a couple of the videos above are from the movie "The Blues Brothers". That movie did so much to resurrect the careers of some music icons who were basically relegated to "oldies" status by then. So much incredible music and so many true musicians were introduced to a new generation of listeners.

Aretha Franklin was one of those who benefitted from her cameo performance in the movie. She was as good as ever, and solidified and extended her reign as the Queen of Soul. She was, is, and always will be a true music icon.

Bonus question: who makes up the music royalty? Ones I can think of:

Aretha Franklin - The Queen of Soul
James Brown - The Godfather of Soul (and the hardest working man is show business)
    Elvis Presley - The King
Michael Jackson - The Prince of Pop

maybe can include Prince - he was, well, a prince, since that was his name

Sadly they are all gone. But none will be forgotten

    Well for the bonus question,

I would add Whitney Houston, Johnny Cash, Mick Jagger (he does not have the same voice, but he and Keith sure know how to make great music, and Aretha sang their songs and played on stage with them), Barbara Streisand, Jimmy Hendriks, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Louis Armstrong, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, Ray Charles, and even for fun Nancy Sinatra and her father and many more.

Aretha had class, was able to stay above the hype and divisiveness of today, lived a great family life, and made absolutely great music. She was an inspiration to many. She deserves RESPECT.

I still remember buying my first QOS album back in 1967. She was a fantastic talent and pretty adept piano player as well. Did much in the battle to eliminate racism in this country as well. Two little played songs she recorded are "Call Me" and "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream".

I e-mailed my congressman and asked him to request that the USPS issue a commemorative stamp for Aretha Franklin. I am a stamp collector and I had thought that this had happened before, where a giant in the entertainment field was honored fairly quickly with a stamp. But I researched this last night and could find no entertainer who had. Usually, USPS will issue a stamp rather quickly after a President's death, but not entertainers. Exceptions I found to the Presidents were Eleanor Roosevelt, Adlai Stevenson and Dag Hammarskjold (UN Secretary-General), they all had stamps issued fairly soon. The only entertainer I could find who was honored so quickly was about 50 years ago, when a Walt Disney stamp came out about 2 years after he died.

Funny - I had the same exact thought.

The rules used to be that a deceased president would get a stamp within one year of his passing, but anyone else had to wait at least 10 years, but that 10 year rule has been relaxed if not eliminated. If you check you will find that the Maya Angelou stamp was issued within a year or two of her passing.

So, bring on the Aretha stamp! The only question is whether or not it will be a single stamp showing a glamorous image from her younger days, or a mini-sheet with multiple images from throughout her career.

I think I will also write to my Congresscritter, as well as the Postmaster General and the Citizen's Stamp Advisory Committee. A stamp will be issued - it is just a question of when - so it might as well be sooner than later.

On a pure voice basis (well, ok great at many other aspects too), she was very much at the top of the game. I'd like to hear [spacey] Christina Aguilera do a tribute album or sing at her funeral. Too bad the latter is not quite IMO right upstairs but she might be able to do the best tribute of all the singers out there.
