Tiny dark spots on this coin?

What could be the cause of the black spots on this coin? IIRC, I once read that these may be the result of saliva "spray" on the coin? Any help/input would be appreciated... FWIW its on a pcgs67+ graded coin which I am considering buying.... just not sure about these spots!

I've elected to take the advice of many "pros" on these boards and implement the old "buy the coin, not the holder!" So I'm going to pass on this one. The spots would forever be the focal point in my eyes! Still interested in knowing the cause of the spots. I think sneeze/saliva spray would be the likely culprit!

It probably occurring after being slabbed....personally it takes away from the eye appeal and better pass if it bothers you.
The experts here will tell you what it is exactly. Let us know what the verdict is :)

The photo is superlarge, not sure how noticeable they'd be in hand....

As it is only on the reverse, could be an old sneeze, or a number of other reasons. Still a nice coin, but if the spots annoy you just pass, conservation would be expensive.

You may want to seek out an MS-66 without the spotting. It should be cheaper and hopefully have a more pleasing overall look. This 67+ has a bunch of spotting on the eagles breast feathers as well.

The tiny dark spots on the coin might be from storeage in a coin folder. Little specks of paper or cardboard, with sulfur in it, landed on the edge and caused the spots. They might dip off, but you would lose the originality, which would not be a fair trade.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

For me, from my experience, if something bothers me when I buy a coin, it will ALWAYS bother me.

This would be an "upgrade" from a 67 coin.....

I understand that. But try to find a coin that you will always enjoy! Or be patient and wait for the right 67 to come along. A nice 66 is nothing to sneeze at(pun intended)! ;)

I have a very nice CAC approved ms67 coin already... This is supposed to be an "improvement" over my 67! ....I have decided to pass on this one due to the spots!!!

    Good call!!

Looks like original toning to me. I've seen original coins that are a lot worse than that. I think it's stable and I like the coin.

This coin is fine. the 'blotches" on the reverse are likely the result of fingermarks.... not too distracting, and identifiable. Also, this coin is clearly mint set toned. The price point is also a factor. Paying +/- $5,000 for a coin leaves little room for "mistakes" when and if you choose to get out of the coin....

The spots could be the beginning of toning, not carbon spots.

    Absolutely.

Good decision....if the spots bother you this much before purchase, then they will drive you batty if you did buy it. Pass, there are better coins out there. Cheers, RickO

There's no mint sets from 1936 (but I wouldn't be surprised if dealers put their silver coins of any year back into mint set holders from the 50's in order to tone the coin).

ACR I was referring to the NGC graded half where the OP was comparing the '36 quarter to his toned, NGC slabbed coin. That half dollar appears to have mint set toning...
