The Type I Silver Three Cent Pieces tend to get ugly spots when they are in Mint State. The reason for this, I believe, is due the fact that they are 75% silver and 25% copper. In 1854 the alloy was changed to 90% silver and 10% copper, like the rest of the U.S. silver coinage. Nicely toned Type I trimes are much harder to find than the Type II and III designs.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I have not seen many of these in person, but from the pictures on this thread they appear rather beautiful.
Think of something that is a lot smaller and thinner than a dime. For that reason, a lot of collectors don't like them.
Here is the only colorful one I have, a Proof 1867. The colors are livelier in person.
Here is a high grade 1852.

I absolutely love this coin series. An almost perfect balance of design elements that talk to me. I need to read about the birth of this coin. Anyone know where the best history on the trime is? Peace Roy
I like the design on these little coins... Though I have not collected them.... Tiny coins are not my area of interest...Well, except for Mercury dimes... Cheers, RickO

You have a really nicely toned RPD FS-301!
As someone who knows next to nothing about varieties (usually I just hope they don't price me out of a coin), I'll ask one simple question: does this make the coin worth more?
PCGS Trends Value has a slight increase for the variety. I looked up AU58, which I have in my Type Set, and there is a posted $50 increase for the variety. It really depends on the buyer, whether or not they want to pony up for the variety.

I almost had a chance at one but did not jump fast enough I like these. One day I will get one.

Being so tiny it is easy for them to hide. They were also easy to lose.
Wow, nice !!!
Here is one with some color. Proof 1871 Truview

Sorry, I meant toned three cent silvers, not three cent silvers in general.

I picked this one up 12 years ago and don't have any intention of letting it go. It does need a new photo, though...
