On October 19, 1781, British General Charles Cornwallis surrendered his army of some 8,000 men to General George Washington at Yorktown, giving up any chance of winning the Revolutionary War.

Finally, here are a few I took earlier today of this weekend"s typhoon flooding as seen from one of the first Shinkansen bullet trains that was able to resume service between Hokkaido and Tokyo.
FWIW here is an added view I captured of the flooding and an update:
Nagano, the prefecture next to where we are volunteer teaching at Mikuni Intermational College was one of the hardest hit. Latest death toll is at 72 with rescue efforts continuing. Levees on 47 rivers broke and there were over 140 landslides. 14,000 homes were either submerged, destroyed or severely damaged. 20,000 households are still without electricity and an even greater number without running water. 5,000 still remain in evacuation centers.
Photobucket is not cooperating with regard to posting photos for this Friday, but can add the following further update as of Friday here in Japan:
Per tonight’s reporting death toll now at 79 with something like 8 still missing. Also of concern is added rain presently falling that could set off further collapses of already saturated soil. Being advised to be on alert for further evacuations.
One of the saddest reportings was of an 80 some year old lady being hoisted into a helicopter when the harness failed to hold and she plunged to her death.
Ironically last weekend’s typhoon moved on to Alaska where it has created storm conditions - albeit of lesser intensity.
View of the Bay Bridge and the skyline of SF from the middle of the bay at sunset. The Golden Gate Bridge is in the background. October is a great time of year to be on the water of the SF Bay. Mild temps and not much wind. The views are spectacular.
A week or two ago, I posted a pic of the fire alarm box I put in my back yard. This week I got a vintage parking meter. It still has coins in it too. I mounted this at the end of my driveway.

I’m still petty sad about the B-17 the 909 crashing a few weeks ago. When I heard the news I thought “Oh no! I hope it’s not the 909”. I have flown in the plane and toured it several times. I remember it being 350 dollars for a half hour or so and 20 bucks to walk through while parked. So glad I did the flight that day.
I have been hunting my belongings for a folder of neat photos of my flight as I was able to access all areas of the plane accept the tail gun and ball turret. This is all I could find. Not finding them yet was a side blessing of sorts because I have viewed almost all my family photos this week in the search and tripped down a lot of other personal history and feelings.
I’m still very connected to the B-17 story and have known an actual pilot from the plane the Dead Engine Kids and the book with same title he wrote from 4 secret crew members 25 mission diaries. Incredible. As a young kid the B-17 was the only subject of my model building.
Ellsworth AFB is in my home town and was originally a B-17 base and practiced bombing in the Badlands National Park before flying from USA, Greenland, England and fighting over Europe. Spent .50 and 20mm shell casings can still be picked up today, many with wartime head stamp dates through the 50s. One plane was said to have crashed into a table on a practice run in fog and I believe I found the site on my hikes based of the bits I find in the area. My time has seen the B-52s at the base as a daily sighting and eventually the B-1 flying missions from here.
I know of others named Sentimental Journey and Aluminum Overcast that still fly, maybe only 4-5 fly today and now that the 909 has crashed and lives lost I’m sure they will all be under new scrutiny. In my heart, I guess I just always liked knowing they still had a few flying and just wanted to say it that it’s a huge loss. I’m sad people died on it.

I've shown this to everyone, so I guess I'll go ahead and show it here. The roaches in my kitchen have made themselves at home, and they are quite bold. I snapped this picture the other night of a roach eating dinner in my kitchen . You can clearly see he is enjoying a meal at his little table...
I wonder what else he was able to find at IKEA. Hope he
had better luck with the instructions

Now just look at this, the roaches in my kitchen are so ungrateful. They are not satisfied with the types of food we buy from the grocery store. They have started their own complaint department.
Apparently C. Roach has repurposed his childs lemonade stand. Crafty
