In 1958 a Garage Band of young college students rose to fame with a song that rocketed to Number One. The song was about Tom Dooley and the band was The Kingston Trio. The subject of their song was a Civil War Veteran who was sentenced to be hung.
A year later another Tom Dooley who was a Viet Nam War Veteran caught the world's attention for his humanitarian efforts in helping refugees in South East Asia. The popularity of that song, with the same name in its opening refrain, expanded the awareness of the contemporary Tom Dooley and brought attention to his efforts on behalf of the refugees.
My first introduction to the concept of participation in an organized service project to help others was as a consequence of my 6th Grade Teacher enlisting the participation of the entire class in putting together a large aid package which was then sent to Dr. Tom Dooley for distribution to the refugees.
Here are photos of the grade school and of that 6th Grade Class that met in it including our teacher, Fred Martin, standing next to me in the photo:
And here is a link to "Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley" as sung by The Kingston Trio:
For those who don't read Japanese katakana, the word on that sign under the word "Try" is "Anguru." Put those together and you have "Tryanguru" or in other words, "Triangle."
At first I thought that Norman Rockwell had been photoshopped into that photo. Then I learned it is actually a 1940s painting by Norman Rockwell that was featured on a 4th of July week printing of the "Saturday Evening Post" and is titled, "Working on the Statue of Liberty." He often cameoed himself into his paintings.
This is my "outside" cat, Missy. She was a stray that just showed up one day, starving and near death, so I fed her and got her healthy and she has stuck around for two years so far.
