Seen below, here in an aerial view, watch as the Alaska Railroad’s Glacier Discovery Train rides along Anchorage, Alaska’s Cook Inlet ocean shore.
As the train exits from view the the scenic mountains across the water make their appearance. Included is Mount Susitna and snow capped mountains of the Alaska Range.
In this video watch Alaska Railroad’s Denali Star Train depart from Anchorage headed to Honolulu. (The Denali Star runs daily all summer between Anchorage and Fairbanks.)
In close to three hours the train arrives in Talkeetna. In another four hours and 20 minutes the train will pull into Denali.
Between those scheduled stops is Honolulu, Alaska. There was once a time when the predecessor train from Anchorage to Fairbanks was a flag-stop train along its entire route and one could get off in Honolulu and reboard in Honolulu by flagging the returning southbound train down by waving a green flag.
Today if you want to stand on the ground in Honolulu, Alaska by rail one can get as close as ten miles on the train and then hiking the rest of the way. This requires getting off the Denali Star Train in Talkeetna and then boarding the last flag-stop train in America, Alaska Railroad’s Hurricane Turn Train. From Talkeetna to its terminus in Hurricane it is 57.3 miles. On the old Alaska Railroad route maps Honolulu was the next stop north of Hurricane, Alaska.
Otherwise just keep your eyes peeled after the Denali Star Train passes over the scenic 296 foot bridge that crosses Hurricane Gulch on its way to its next scheduled stop after Talkeetna, Denali, and you will have both seen and been in Honolulu!

Princess Cruises and Holland America Dome Cars Pushed by Alaska Railroad Train Engine at Site of Past Big Miracle Movie Set
Alaska Railroad provides its engine to reverse travel a train equipped completely with dome cars bearing the names of two prominent cruise lines, Princess Cruises and Holland America.
Both lines are owned by Carnival and both dock their ships that come to South Central Alaska at the Port of Whittier near Anchorage. These cruise lines offer optional tours for travel by Dome Car from Anchorage to Denali Park.
In this video watch as the train of domed cars is backed up with the Alaska Railroad Engine pushing it toward the Anchorage Train Depot.
In the final scene the set location where the Hollywood film “Big Miracle” was filmed is seen. On the gravel pad just beyond the centered red boat huge water filled tanks were dug for the placing of animatronic whales and the gravel pad was made into an ice field set on which actors Drew Barrymore, John Krasinski, Ted Danson, and Kristan Bell interacted with the whales.
The visible red boat was in the same location during the filming as it is seen in the video.

That photo and commentary brought back memories of a visit to an automotive plant in Europe where the tour guide jokingly commented that today's choice of colors is referred to by the paint team as "50 Shades of Grey."
Made good money in the early 70's dealing with square bales.
$1/hr. , Bologna sandwhich and RC cola for lunch. Three times
a year. About 1977 the round bales took over.
