Don Shields died within the last six months. He was the main Grumman Test Pilot for the Lunar Module. He was the last human to touch LM-5 (better known as Eagle) while it was still on this Earth, specifically the day before launch, while it was in the Saturn V third stage roughly 300 feet above the launchpad. Don was a heck of a fun guy to hang around and BS with.
Twenty years ago I rescued a hot air balloonist that had landed in a field and was being blown into some trees by grabbing the crown line and pulling as hard as possible. Later as payment he let me jump from his balloon, at the time I had 250 airplane jumps and was a bit nervous as my parachute was in the shop and had borrowed a buddys who I had just taught how to pack plus had no idea where I was going to land when we took off. One of the most exhilarating jumps I ever did.
