When you begin to lose motivation for collecting
Came across this. Keeps me motivated!
"A farmer and his son had a beloved stallion who helped the family earn a living. One day, the horse ran away and their neighbors exclaimed, “Your horse ran away, what terrible luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
A few days later, the horse returned home, leading a few wild mares back to the farm as well. The neighbors shouted out, “Your horse has returned, and brought several horses home with him. What great luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
Later that week, the farmer’s son was trying to break one of the mares and she threw him to the ground, breaking his leg. The villagers cried, “Your son broke his leg, what terrible luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
A few weeks later, soldiers from the national army marched through town, recruiting all the able-bodied boys for the army. They did not take the farmer’s son, still recovering from his injury. Friends shouted, “Your boy is spared, what tremendous luck!” To which the farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
The moral of this story, is, of course, that no event, in and of itself, can truly be judged as good or bad, lucky or unlucky, fortunate or unfortunate, but that only time will tell the whole story. Additionally, no one really lives long enough to find out the ‘whole story,’ so it could be considered a great waste of time to judge minor inconveniences as misfortunes or to invest tons of energy into things that look outstanding on the surface, but may not pay off in the end.
The wiser thing, then, is to live life in moderation, keeping as even a temperament as possible, taking all things in stride, whether they originally appear to be ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ Life is much more comfortable and comforting if we merely accept what we’re given and make the best of our life circumstances. Rather than always having to pass judgement on things and declare them as good or bad, it would be better to just sit back and say, “It will be interesting to see what happens.”

Nice story, thanks for sharing !!!
I don't lose motivation for collecting because there are so many that value what I know. Which makes me feel I'm needed in this hobby, and appreciated. This is, at least where I can make an impact in my own sphere of influence. Please don't think this as narcissistic...it is more a passing down.
Most people in my coin club get understanding for coins through the Red Book, or, their Coin World subscription...
What I have in these coin forums, and other forums is the chance to share what I learn from all of you. What is posted is passed on, so, nothing is for naught. I look like an All Star, and all you who contribute make the whole better. I keep coming back because the more I learn; the more I can share, and the more I'm appreciated, and in turn so much I can share with you even though a fraction from what's learned.
This is a learning, seeking, and finding event on many levels that combine into a functioning, working apparatus. I'm pleased to be a moving part; no matter how small it may be- so long as it makes others, and myself happy. Truly.
+1

There is a level of wisdom in what you wrote, but as the economist, John Maynard Keynes, wrote, “In the long run we are all dead.” It remains to be seen what will happen in long run, but given the current grading situation and collector demographics, it is discouraging. I am super dedicated as a collector, but my brain tells me that I need to cool it because the prospects within the next several years are not good.
Please keep in mind over the last 1,000 years men have been lamenting "it is the end of times" along with, "this is the generation that will see the return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ".
Personally, I see more wonderful activities in our future than I see dreaded scenarios.
As the song goes.... 'What ever will be, will be - Que sera, sera'... Go with the flow and only swim upstream when time to spawn (that is salmon logic) ....Life is all about choices, and what you make of those choices. Have fun, it is only a life. Cheers, RickO
What's with all these negative tones @abcde12345 ? Don't you want to be BRIGHT-EYED BUSHY-TAILED each and every single awaken morning?
Let's add an alphabet & a number for A CHANGE to your CU name just trying to 'jink' the neg.....

.....the underlying connotation is negative and I rather see OP drill on POS
I see this thread as being tied in with the other current one about being sidetracked. My motivation is mostly enjoyment. For me to find enjoyment certain expectations need to be met.
However, I lose motivation and get distracted when I feel overwhelmed or hopeless in regard to meeting those expectations. If I find the coins I want out of reach due to availability or finances I can become discouraged. But I love the hobby so much that I do seek out remedies. Reading the great info on this forum is one way.

Remember, none of us are getting out of this alive, so live appropriately.
