How much scratch is too much scratch to pony up our hard earned scratch before scratching our heads?

I'd scratch this coin off my list.

    What does scratch mean again?

NGC gave a foreign coin of mine AU details and the scratch on mine wasn't as big as this one!

Just curious...@originalisbest ....why did you give 'disagree' on Kathy opinion?
Do you care to explain your point of view for me to understand ?

I see the scratch but don’t equate that to a cleaning. I do think it’s long but the strike and luster on that make it up.

Easy. No amount of strike or luster would make up for that HUGE distracting scratch -- it's just as bad as a scrubbed coin; pick your poison, but both are bad and shouldn't be satisfactory in one's collection. In my opinion, there's no way this one should have straight graded. I'd call this a "mistake" coin, but that's perfectly understandable, nobody's perfect.

More like a low end F grade coin.

If you subtract the mark it looks like a 65+/66.
Even with that said, I think it should not have straight graded, but the market will decide the value, regardless of the grade (or no grade.)

That scratch is glaringly obvious... I would pass on that coin. Cheers, RickO

    This....

Even if it was priced, say, as an AU50?
Not that that's likely to happen...but..what if?

I would rather have a nice problem free AU50 or maybe a choice XF45 over this coin, and it isn't even close for me.

I will take this coin over a 45/50.

Now, if it had a bad rim ding........forget about it! :)

From a strictly dollar perspective, I'd see it as a $600 coin or so for nice details and luster; no problem 63s go for a couple hundred more. I'd like to hear how dealers price problem coins from a "market grading" perspective.

Agree with grip. That’s a significant scratch... e.g., damage. Should be in a “Details” holder.
