Please help me with this Draped Bust Quarter

Hi everyone. I just bought this off of ebay, and would like your thoughts.

I don't have tons of money to lay out for high-end type pieces, so I am building a collection that I can afford.

I got this today, and it's worn down thin. Lots of scratches. Lots! But I am wondering your opinions on the following:

  1. Is it genuine?
  2. Does the quarter exhibit honest wear, or has it been cleaned, polished, etc.?
  3. Did I get a fair deal for the coin ($290)?

BTW, it weighs 6.636 grams.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

From the photos provided, I believe it is genuine and has honest wear and original surfaces.

I don't like the scratches, but certainly some are to be expected after that much use in commerce. I don't know enough about them, to say if the price is fair or not, but hopefully it was discounted appropriately for the scratches.

I do know none of the draped bust quarters are 'common', relative to many other series....some are just less scarce than others.

    I'd say "genuine" as well....

But I'm not so sure on the wear being totally natural. The centers on the coin, (if we are allowed to grade PARTS of a coin), are approaching Fine(?)...but the rims are completely worn down. Almost unnaturally so?

As for the price, you paid something under what a "Good" goes for, which doesn't seem unreasonable to me. A nice representation of the design without price normally required(?)

The piece appears to be genuine. It was probably cleaned many years ago, but has a typical look for a coin in this grade. The sharpness is close to Good-4, but the scratches pull it down to About Good money. The price guide numbers are as follows:

    Good - 4 Graysheet $410
    "Coin Facts" Good - 4 $475, AG-3, $230

Most AG-3 coins are not going to show this much detail or be quite as attractive, so I would say that you got a fair deal.

Looks authentic and I agree with the grade stated above.... Enjoy your coin... Cheers, RickO

  • Agree with others looks genuine & fair deal. Believe it is B-9 from obverse die crack (going from memory, currently at work).
As ricko stated "Enjoy your coin"

I don't like the scratches. There are Good and AG coins out there that are not as severely scratched and will be much easier to live with over time. You can be as picky at this grade as the guys buying mint state coins, without paying a premium. I've god some early types in G/AG that have relatively smooth surfaces, at least to the naked eye. Took some looking but they're there.

It is genuine, however, the scratches are a major detraction. Being honest, you could have done better for the price.

Return it. There are better ones availably for the price you paid.
