GTG, Oh Wow Another of These? Everybody's ugly, the 1884S Morgan

Somehow, as always the coin looks better in hand, but IMO looks to be a possible slider.

Man that reverse looks nice (PL too!) Sadly, my guess on the obverse is only AU53-55.

The reverse of my 84-S is also much better than the obverse. Of course, if both sides looked that way it'd be a 5-figure coin.

On a good day AU 58

I’m going 62, market acceptable, assuming it’s not in a BB.

    AU because of obverse.

Really nice reverse (hmmmm I seem to have said that before :D )... Overall, probably an AU55... In hand, and not magnified with those really great pictures... could go 58... Cheers, RickO

    My guess would be 61.

The 1884-S dollar is notorious for being common and cheap in AU and below and expensive and hard to find in strict Mint State. Because of this the grading services have been pretty strict with this date and mint, and they have not handed out Mint State grades for it easily. The OP coin is no better than AU-55 or 53 on the obverse and has a dulled look as if it has been cleaned. The nicer reverse is trumped by the obverse.

I'll try to post a video of it tonight. As I see it the reverse is very nice, possibly worthy of a 62/3 but the obverse is the shortcoming. Still, it is well struck with minimal wear but with some mild contact marks. Let's see if that changes opinions.

As has been stated, the coin is about in low-mid AU but seems hard for them to make that hurdle to upper AU or low MS.

Very tough to get 58s on these as Bill said, though I think NGC is more lenient.

This is an 84-S. You will never get the benefit of the doubt on an 84-S as the difference between AU and MS is huge. A 62 is a $20,000 coin. This isn’t even a particularly choice AU.

Gives me an 'improperly cleaned' vibe. If straight graded I think the obverse would limit it to 58.

There is no way that can happen unless it is in an "Uncle Elmer's Grading Service" holder.

I give it a 58. Grading service, as of late, most likely a 55.

For those calling it MS-62, do you want to buy some 84-S Morgans? I have a bunch of MS-62's for you!

I cheated, but indeed the reverse is WAY nicer than the obverse.

The obverse looks washed out and possibly has been cleaned, so I'll go with AU details. If this is solely because of image quality, I'd call it AU55

This is why market grading is a joke. If it is "not a 62" only because it's an 1884-S [which is probably the case], then the TPGs have no clothes.

Like a lot of PLs this semi did not scan well, it had excellent eye appeal:

    Upgraded to 58 at NGC.

From 55 to 58 is a $1000 upgrade. Nice work!
