Gawd, I hate the Ebay '*'!

ElmerFusterpuckElmerFusterpuck Posts: 4,774 ✭✭✭✭✭

I know a lot of people post their Ebay offers here that I never seem to get, so this morning I get this message on the My Ebay page:

Today Only:
20% Off Everything!* <--- oh oh

Yeah, that stupid '*' means the word "Everything" loses some or all of its superpowers. Scrolling down, that was confirmed. Nice.

This Coupon is a 20% discount off a minimum purchase of $50, valid from 7:00 AM PT June 6, 2018 until 7:00 PM PT on June 6, 2018. Discount applies to the purchase price (excluding shipping, handling, and taxes) of eligible items on eBay.com, cafr.ebay.ca and ebay.ca, and will be capped at a maximum value of $100.

*Eligible items exclude warranties and protection plans, as well as items from the Coins & Paper Money, Gift Cards & Coupons, and Real Estate categories.

Boo!!!!!

Take a look in some other categories (people do list coins elsewhere) or ask a trusted seller if you have their contact info (email).

Don't hate Just Love @ElmerFusterpuck.....on the flip side this offer made others happy inclusively.

So weird, you "hate" ebay because they give you a 20% coupon. I wish I got one! I need stock up on office supplies for the business, which would help the bottom line.

The advice to look for numismatic (or near numismatic) items in another category is a good suggestion. Sometimes it simply can't work though, even when an item is listed in multiple categories.

Somebody near STL has a new bronze medal (average quality stuff) for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Belleau Woods, which took place in June, 1918. I'd like to have one, but it is listed at $20 plus $3 shipping. Listed in both coins AND militaria, so I'm guessing I could get the 20% off. But at $16 plus $3 shipping, it is still wildly overpriced. Oh well!

I have been waiting for eBay to report earnings results for the first quarter of 2018. It would be hard to believe that the super generous eBay Bucks promotions at the end of March 2018 DIDN'T shake their bottom line earnings.

  • mbogomanmbogoman Posts: 5,222 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'll bet the revenues for all the Ebay Bucks related sales are recognized in the current quarter, but the Bucks payouts are not recognized until the following quarter (that's when they are paid out). They are constantly robbing Peter to pay Paul. It's a never ending cycle - lather, rinse, repeat...

That sequence for recognizing the cost DOES make a lot of sense. Perhaps we won't know too soon. "Never-ending cycles" do come to an end, sooner or later.

Ya you would think they would bite the bullet for one quarter.

Oh well, as long as ebay continues to give me ebucks, I will try to max it out as it is all about business and the ebucks helps me make some buying decisions much easier.

First quarter of 2018 I received at least 2.5 times as much in eBay Bucks as I had ever received in any prior quarter! And I owe that to the gentlemen on this forum who gave the group a 'heads-up' about what was happening!

In modern American corporate life, you NEVER voluntarily "bite the bullet". If your company's Certified Public Accountant isn't threatening to resign over the financial statements and earnings that are about to be released, you just say "oh screw it"!

  • Bigbuck1975Bigbuck1975 Posts: 1,276 ✭✭✭✭✭

So would this be eBay Bucks or a true discount. Looks like a discount to me?

  • ElmerFusterpuckElmerFusterpuck Posts: 4,774 ✭✭✭✭✭

Yes maybe "hate" was a strong word but it was not meant to be taken literally. It's not stopping my world today, I just deleted it and moved on after some looking. Ebay is not the only one by any means that does gotchas like this; lots of other "free" or "everything" offers abound out there.

One of my favorites are hotels that offer "free" Wifi with the *, which usually mean there are other stray charges attached that add to the rate. I then ask how much the rate is without the "free" WiFi and end up with a rate reduction.

Bottom line for any business is just to shoot straight and cut out all the BS and "*"s . I know it's used as lure to try and hook you, but it just feels slimy. It's like getting $100 and being told you can only spend it on days that don't end in Y.

  • BillDugan1959BillDugan1959 Posts: 3,821 ✭✭✭✭✭

The deal with hotel rates is all the people who are traveling and who are going to be reimbursed by their employers. They are not very price sensitive, but they live on the free food, free alcohol, free wi-fi and free adult channels. There are a handful who are interested in the quality of the gym/weight room and the pool/jacuzzi. Those folks also want the points toward free hotel stays and rarely mention those to the employers who foot the bill. The people who are forced to be on the road often have other priorities over the cost, which is being paid by others.

I get these offers all the time, but never get the ebucks offers. The offers I do get are for things I have no interest in, so it is the same as getting no offers.

I stick primarily with purchasing cards but sell some coins from time to time and have wondered the same thing. Maybe they feel they don't HAVE to promote the sale of these items?? I sort of get gift cards but not coins and currency.
As far as the statements above being right/wrong to ask a dealer to change a category to get the discount, I just that is just a matter of personal morality.

    Tomorrow never comes...it's always tomorrow.

Serious question...does this offer include auctions, or just buy it now stuff? I would hate to throw down a higher than usual bid and NOT be able to discount the item...not coin related.

Probably because of the highly reduced fees enjoyed by the goliath coin sellers.

I have to put some more stuff up. Been slow with the e bay lately. Perhaps I will launch a few goodies that I know you all will appreciate. E bay Flea bay can't live with them, can't live without. I think I buy 50% of all my non parishable on that site

All possibilities. I was just curious if the volume $ wise is so high that they don’t want to take the 20% hit.

Edit: another person on the forum posted this.. sounds like a possibility.

“I assume (not positive) that eBay is trying to prevent people from buying cash or cash equivalents. I believe that in the past they used to prohibit just items in the bullion category, as well as a few others (such as gift cards, etc.). Now they have expanded it to everything in Coins & Paper Money.

Imagine the scams people would come up with to abuse the coupon if they could use the discount to buy money. You and your friends could sell each other $500 in current paper money for $400.

Collector coins, on the other hand, are presumably not the real target of the rule, but they get caught up in the process.”

I saw this offer in an earlier thread and was disappointed since I purchased an item yesterday....then in this thread I see the offer was capped at $100....So I would not have been able to use it anyway... ;) Cheers, RickO
