Re: U.S. Mint buys drug cartel gold
Some of the article was interesting but it wasn't until the very end that the author mentioned this key point:
It has not cut off foreign gold; doing so, she said, would make it impossible to meet demand.
In any case, unless the gold is from freshly mined metal, the gold could have had a prior incarnation dating back years, decades, centuries, or millenia. It could have spent time as a Roman aureus two thousand years ago, a king's crown in Medieval times, or a Cartier brooch in the Roaring Twenties. It might have had some dark history during the Nazi era, or been part of a tyrant's stockpile.
Gold is not a disposable metal and it never has been. It has always been valued and recycled.
As far as I know, rules for American gold or silver coins being made from new mining output were intended to support the US mining industry, not necessarily to address other issues in the world in regard to mining conditions. Those might be important considerations, but I don't think they were a primary motivation when the bullion coin programs were established.

Auction NEWP - arrived today:
Much nicer in hand, although the pics are fine. Tough, T-2 G$1. Nice detail with no issues.
Absolutely splendid gold dollar!

Thanks @GuzziSport: plus, it’s much more affordable at this level!Just my approach and my opinion, but I have no desire to strive for high or highest grade coins - I love original and interesting coins, and don’t care at all that they’ve circulated, matter of fact it adds to the allure. This coin is a perfect example of the type of coin that I seek.
100% agree!!
Re: JA evaluates coins for CAC in real time — great vid
I spent enough time around some great graders to understand and accept that I will never grade at a pro level. I do try to improve and do lot viewing for auctions to brush up, but this video had great examples of things I would miss.
I know there are CAC detractors (including on here) but it is hard to imagine someone watching this video and not appreciating what a great asset JA has been to the hobby.
Re: How do you handle hagglers at shows?
I'm super bad at it. I just hate haggling. It's why I usually drive a new car for 15 years.
I'll usually say ''Nice coin. So what's your best price in this one?' I'll listen and then decide. No counteroffer. Just Y/N after that, and then I move on. Time is precious, and I don't want to waste their time.

Re: What would you consider as average percentage premium for a Toner?
You're not "ripped on one" until you go to sell it and get substantially less.
I've been "ripped" on buying one and sold for a profit when I was (almost) ready to sell...and some may think the buyer was "ripped" but I honestly think, since he plans to own for a bit, that he will NOT be "ripped" when he goes to sell it.
Depends on the coin and the toning. Some are more common than others with toning and if the toning is NT and unique, throw the guide away.
