    I was born and raised in Wisconsin and can add a bit to the history. The nickname Badgers came from the lead miners that were mentioned above. They lived in caves in the hillsides "like Badgers". The name stuck and the state later adopted the nickname. If I remember right Wisconsin is on the fringe of the American Badger's range - I know I never saw one the 20+ years I lived there.
