The PCGS U.S. Coin Forum Virtual Type Set!!!

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
November 26, 2012 TTT for new members-----I thought I'd run this to the top for some newer members who may have never seen it. FromMyLoftyPerch it's a sterling example of how the forum can cooperate and what a whacky group of coin-nerds can accomplish. Sadly, none of the links I tried today are still active and the original host website is no longer active, but it was a sight to behold when all the pictures showed up!!

Al H.

I thought I'd run this to the top to see if anyone may have missed it and also, to see if some members may be able to help move the set toward completion. The set composition and progress can be viewed in this first post or at this site hosted by forum member solid. Thanks again for everyone's help in this endeavor.

In this thread earlier in the week I proposed that the members of the U.S. Coin Forum assemble a "Virtual Type Set" composed of pictures of their coins. It seemed to meet with enough approval and interest to merit at least starting the project, so I thought I should post the Set Composition and a few guidelines for including your coins if you choose to participate. Please remember that this is just a venture for our enjoyment and the "rules" aren't carved in granite. It does help to have something in place to make things fair and understandable for everyone, though. A couple of members have volunteered to help with picture hosting and website development, but initially this thread will contain the set and the pictures. With that said, here we go!!!

1. We'll start accepting pictures on Sunday, July 3rd, at 12 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time. That should help give plenty of time for all members who wish to participate to notice the thread and get pictures ready. I had hoped to get PCGS to hold the thread at the top of page one through July 4th, but it looks like that isn't gonna happen. Frequent TTT's till noon Sunday, please.image

2. Please limit your submissions to one Mint State coin and one Proof coin. That should help encourage more participation as we start the project. After awhile we can accept additional coins to fill holes in the set. Dealers are encouraged to participate. Remember, dealer or collector, the coins should be coins you own. If you sell a coin that's in the set, please let us know so another can take it's place.

3. You can link/post your pictures to this thread or send them to me via PM once we start. What I'd like to do is use one each MS/PR on a first-come-first-served basis for each issue as the website "PlateCoin" with links for all the additional coins. We can then rotate the coins at some regular interval so every member gets a chance to be listed as the "PlateCoin" owner. Please use jpeg format. We'll only be cropping/sizing the pictures so that everything has a uniform appearance and the initial thought is to crop out the holders so that the emphasis is on the coin and not the grade/service.

4. ANY coin is eligible but hopefully you'll excersize restraint and honesty!!!! The Set Composition listed below is the same that PCGS uses in their Registry so coins should conform to their criteria. If a coin is raw or the picture doesn't show an insert, please include the grade and service. Following along the lines of honesty, don't exxagerate the grade or submit something that you know is counterfiet, AT, altered, etc. The intent is to display pictures of a full set of United States regular issue coinage showing the designs as best as possible, a set owned by various members of this board.

After we get srtated and as more coins are submitted, I'll pass the pictures along to the hosting website and we can start to get the page developed. When something viewable is available a thread should be started to alert everyone. To help avoid duplicates, I'll try to post what's already been submitted next to each of the issues below. That should help alert anyone to coins still needed and who's participating. If you'd like your coin(s) removed for any reason, simply PM and I'll do that.

Any questions or suggestions??? Just PM or post them here.

Al H.

Al, this is great and should be great for all of us for some time to come. Thank you for doing the legwork (fingerwork, in this case). I hope that there are some Stella owners and draped bust QE owners that are members here. That might be the stopper. ("Honey, will you buy me a "Stella" for my 40th birthday?" "Sure, RYK, where do we get them?")

In order to maximize participation and completion, there may have to be some coordination of the entries. Also, after a period of time, if the set is not full, we might allow contributors to make additional contributions.

I am looking forward to participating and seeing how it turns out.

    hey Tom

in #3 above i've asked for pictures to be either sent to me via PM or posted to this thread, after the opening, of course. that will allow some type of time management as to when a picture was submitted and who'll be first for the rotating listings. i'll try to crop the images before sending them along to you. Ken can get together with you and access the pictures to set up the links after he has the page developed.

in the interim, i should be able to keep a running tally attatched to this thread. "should be" are the operative words!!!

it won't make much sense to send really large pictures because we'll be cropping/sizing them, probably to just show the coin at about 100-150k. that will be a decision made by the website host due to space constraints.

For me then it won't be necessarily my best coins, but my best pictures

Good pictures from me are much more rare than any coin I own image

I think it would be nice to have a consistent format, something like this

now that's a nice coin and a nice picture!!

this is more along the lines of the format i had thought of, a simple picture of the coin and nothing else. that's my thinking about what would appear under the heading for each issue type when featured as the PlateCoin along with the members ID. the links of additional coins in the set, extras, would list the date/service/grade/member ID. that way the issues would all be displayed in some fashion but if you wanted to look at the links for something specific you'd know what you were gonna see before you clicked on it.

Nice coin keets, I know its off topic. But what kind is it?
If I say something in the woods, and my wife isn't around. Am I still wrong?

it's actually a medal, a So-Called Dollar. it's the size/composition of a Gold Dollar and commemorates the 300th Anniversary of the discovery of the Hudson River by Hendrik(Henry) Hudson in 1609.

i agree with you, Eric, the set should be something to behold when it's done. there are already some nice coin's pictured.image

i've tried to get the pictures up to help any member interested in participating have an idea of what's needed. the pictures are only sized to upload to the PCGS server(50k) and will be bigger at the webpage. if anyone notices a mistake with a link please give me a PM and i'll fix it. i proofread as i was doing it and already corrected several!!!image please bear with me if one's in the wrong slot; the terminology used by PCGS doesn't always coincide with that used by Breen and many of these issues are unfamiliar to me. i guess that makes this an educational thread!!!

has anyone else noticed that quite a few of the coins have corrosion???image
