Have you ever dealt with rust on a buffalo nickel? photo posted
Just looking for any opinion as to what can be done. Looks like rust. Could just be plain corrosion. -

From an image, it's tough to tell the difference between rusted dies and pitted coin surfaces. However, in-hand you'll see that rusted dies leave small protrusions on the coin's surfaces whereas corroded coins will show as pits on the surfaces. -

How common are modern coins struck from rusted dies??
I pulled 20-30 identical coins with the exact same raised defects in exact same location from a mint bag of 1000 Bison 2000 nickels. It appears the die must have been rusted. Agree?? Other explanations?? -

Did any Alaska gold rush era territorial coins circulate?
During the Alaska gold rushes (Klondike, Nome etc.), was any gold coined into locally circulating coins? There are a few Alaskan gold pieces issued so just wondering if they were assayed and minted into circulation coins. -

Vinegar will work but it may leave pitting on the steel... The rust comes off and floats to the top, but there most likely be "scars" from where the rust once was.
