Re: Any closure to PCGS's $50,000 reward to find a solution to ASE milk spotting?
There are some problems with this; Anyone who's ever minted will tell you that, when there's spots on the planchets, you position that planchet (whenever possible) so that it lies within the area that will be struck into the relief of the coin. This is so that the "milk spot" will not be visible in the struck coin and… -
Re: Milk spot or ding... which would you sell or keep?
<< <i>Newbie-- What are milk spots? >> Milk spots are white patches that form on silver coins. They can be found on Mint State or Proof coins, but they are most obvious on the Proofs. Usualy they seem to form on coins that are the most perfect where they will be most visible and ugly. The trouble with milk spots is that… -
Re: What's the FUZZ with milk spots when the toning process would eventually BLOOM over it?
If your ASEs are collector coins like W mint marked burnished, proofs or reverse proofs they are worth much more as untoned, white coins with no spots in 70 grades. As an ex ASE collector I lost a bunch of money when coins I purchased in 70 graded holders later developed spots. I have never seen a slabbed 70 develop… -

Re: What causes 'milk' spots on silver proofs??
In Rick Tomaska's book - "Cameo and Brilliant Proof Coinage of the 1950 to 1970 Era", he discusses milk spots on page 26 & 27. In a nutshell he mentions that milk spots are most often found on silver proofs from 1958 to 1964 (I agree with this observation). Small spots may be removable but large spots were not removable… -

Re: Milk Spotting On Silver Eagles & Ziploc Freezer Bags.....
<< <i>....only the ones in slabs were milk spotted of which totaled 56. ... >> Which brings me back, again, to the point I've been making all along on this issue, which is the shipping back and forth and all the handling of these bullion slugs is what is contributing the most to milk spotting. I know these things will spot… -
Re: Milk spots. Opinions welcomed.
I have a quantity of AH Kennedy's and have no milk spots on them.... As far as I know, once developed, there really is no successful removal. Years ago, Russ recommended an acetone bath of the coin (ASE's) as soon as received (mint issues, non slabbed).... I did that when I used to buy ASE's... and still do it if I buy any… -
Re: What ever came about on D Hall's $50,000 reward to address milk spots
In the early 2000's, when there was a lot of discussion about milk spots, Russ told me that dipping ASE's in acetone soon after receipt, would prevent milk spots. I did that and none of my ASE's spotted. Now, I have no idea how he had discovered that, and certainly has no effect once the milk spots appear. However, I… -
