Re: ? The Real reason PCGS doesn't want to grade W-SAE
I agree that the guarantee PCGS provides makes them really stay on the conservative side. They are a great outfit with the highest possible standards. But there are an awful lot of other problems any/all coins can have. How does PCGS grade ANY coins and give a guarantee? I have a couple of older proofs where 'copper spots'… -
Re: just curious, does PCGS do a sniffer test for bakelite?
<< <i> The gal who was in charge of the U. S. Mint quality program said that they were ordering a mass spectrometer [which was put on hold due to sequestration] to investigate the milk spotting of ASEs. My question was why, it isn't a very useful tool for the job. >> I agree. I just can't see buying an instrument that… -
Re: 1971 D Kennedy - How would you grade this reverse?
Hate to be the broken record, but yes, looks weakly struck. Very mushy on that shield. There appears to be a rather nasty scratch on the reverse going to the “U” in United States. The obverse looks like it has milk spots. The reverse really looks like it’s going to bring it down. Unfortunately, those dang milk spots seem… -
2010 ASE with milkspots
So I was curious and watched a couple of auctions for PCGS MS70 First Strike 2010 ASE's and am kinda confused. A coin with milk spots went for $66 and the previous day one without spots (a perfect MS70 FS PCGS) went for $77 which seems to be the going price. I thought milk spots were like a cancer to those coins and killed… -

Re: Did PCGS disavow grades on ASE's gone bad??
Too bad about the milk spots...and the mustard stain...not sure what that can be. That is the first 'yellow' stain on an ASE that I have seen....My evaluation would be that is post mint contamination - not the milk spots, the yellow stain... I have the series up until the skipped year and I have no milk spots or spots of… -
Re: white spots on my pcgs cam proofs ! pic of damage here !
<< <i> << <i> << <i>Milk spots don't "grow" on proofs from the 60's. Either a coin has them or it doesn't. I know exactly what the OP is talking about. I see it way too much, not only on Proofs, but on white uncs. I attribute probably 60% to mishandling by the greasy fingered, spittle spittin' guy in the sealing room. I… -
Re: spots on Kennedy halves
<< <i>Great collections has 4 1964 Accented Hair DCAMS in this week's auction . they have the milk spots .... do the spots on these dcams subtract from the listed grade on holders ? >> No, unlike SAEs which develop milk spots in the holder, milk spots on 64 Kennedy proofs developed when the coins were in the Mint mylar.… -
Re: Should PCGS give MS70 for ASEs over 10 yr. old??
<< <i> << <i>Anyone have some pics of milk spots? I wonder if this is similar to some spots I recently discovered on a bunch of my slabbed coins when light hits them just right...? Some of the one's I am thinking of are silver, some clad. >> The coin in this auction has milk spots They cannot be removed. >> Kudos to that… -
Re: Pro and Con Opinions of buying a VaultBox
Yep looks like a second example with milk spots (along with the earlier shown proof). With so few coins (2400 total) it would have been nice to pre screen for anything milk spotted. I guess it could have been in a roll for many years and taking it out of that environment to transfer into a slab caused the spots-still it is…
