You should know SOME dealers are packed up and left on thursday in anticipation of Friday's "Black Lives Matter" day of rage rally scheduled to take place on pratt street (right outside the convention center on friday afternoon.)
The show was quite abuzz about the rally and safety . Call/email your favorite dealer ahead to find out if they will be there and most important everyone be safe.

it was unfortunate to learn just how much violent crime comes with numis.

There were enough dealers set up at the end of the day today that I didn't even notice that anyone had left early, but I don't doubt that some did. Anyway, to say that "most dealers are packed up and left" is completely untrue.
However, it is true that the show will close early on Friday, just to play it safe. (IIRC, the bourse is closing between 4 and 4:30 PM.) Saturday's schedule remains unaffected.

The part of Baltimore around the Convention center where shows are held has always seemed very safe, and while I would always recommend being careful has never seen a problem and I've gone there for nearly 25 years. I park at the hotel and walk through it and everything "groovy".
I've heard it's safe before in similar comments. But I'm not willing to risk it.
I think there could be huge national coin show here in Charleston, WV. It's relatively central to large populations...AND SAFE. Boring, not much to do, but safe, relatively speaking.
Ridiculous totally untrue comment.

I think that doing away with Sunday at a multiday show is a good idea. Saturday seems to be okay when it's the last day.
With the number of security officers employed by the Expo, and the regular force of
police officers that normally watch over the Convention Center and the downtown and
Inner Harbor areas, I don't think you'll find a much safer public area in the whole city!
If you're worried about your personal safety, Expo attendees can call the Downtown
Partnership Escort Line (410-244-8778) or the Waterfront Partnership Escort Line
(443-278-4701) to be safely escorted to or from the convention, day or night. These
friendly volunteers are the “eyes and ears” for the Inner Harbor Police Unit.
Downtown Baltimore Guides are another resource: certified, uniformed, radio-equipped
volunteers patrol the streets and provide visitor assistance by car, by bike, and on foot.
And a city-wide network of 538 closed-circuit cameras is monitored around the clock,
seven days a week.
As always, the Expo’s vigilant security team and standard procedures will be in place
for the protection, convenience, and comfort of all.
I think if you go to the show you'll have a great time and add some wonderful coins,
tokens, medals, and paper money to your collections. Enjoy and have fun!

I was there all day Thursday, did business, and thought it was reasonably well attended. I did notice that the submissions tables at PCGS and NGC were less busy than normal, though that may be because it was a Thursday. I'm going back on Saturday.

Well... JJ Teaparty is leaving at 1PM. Legend is gone. Others packing it in too...
Interesting. Well, I'm still going Saturday morning, so we shall see what it looks like then.

I haven't heard any reports of dealers leaving, or of collectors staying away in droves.

LOL.. 538 closed circuit cameras ....May I ask if you from a small town ?? Cameras do little to stop someone that wants to commit a crime against a person.. but yes indeed My friend did not leave, and is still there Today, in Baltimore

I will be in attendance both Saturday and Sunday. Please stop by and say hello.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

Listen to Julian... I was there today. Had fun.

This is why Julian has the #1 prime time table at the show. He is always there for the customers/collectors.
Seriously the decision to close the show early on Friday was one of the dumbest, most shortsighted decisions I've witnessed in my 18 years of involvement in the numismatic industry. It was all perpetuated by people who were getting worked up over nothing but secondary hearsay, rumors and paranoia.
Because of all the commotion and worry, there were more dealers who left earlier than normal. Attendance on Friday was expected to be dismal but attendance turned out to be much better than expected.
Ultimately it was much ado about nothing, and especially irrevelant were comments and fear mongering by people who didn't even attend the show in the first place.

And after all the paranoia, innuendo, assumptions, and all that other crap dealers and attendees got worked up about...nothing happened. Nothing happened in or anywhere around the convention center outside of the norm of a normal summer Friday night in Baltimore. Coin dealers weren't burned at the makeshift stake in the middle of Pratt Street, the city wasn't burned down at exactly 7pm like many of the dealers thought was sure to happen, and the Inner Harbor wasn't placed under martial law.

Thanks for the report. I've seen that same scenario play out over the years in life. Humans can be strange creatures at times.
I don't think it's a stretch to be cautious, given the altercations seen around BLM events.
Anyways, an ounce of prevention is worth....blah blah blah

And in all honesty coin dealers are some of the worst in that regard. If you thought late September California wildfires spread fast, you haven't seen what a rumor can do at a large coin show. At 10am one dealer brings up the fact that there might be a verdict in a criminal trial at the city court. By 2pm the show staff decide to close the next day's show early because dealers are on the verge of peeing their pants thinking about what *might* happen. By 3pm apparently all of Baltimore was going to be burned down while coin dealers would be thrown into the inferno like firewood. By 4pm some dealers were looking for gun shops in Virginia to go on a last minute shopping spree at. By 5pm some dealers checked out of their downtown hotels to move to the suburbs or fly home. The whole thing was just one unfunny joke and it didn't help that some of the show's private security staff were quietly telling dealers to leave town no later than 1pm Friday, torpedoing their own show in the process. It was completely and utterly stupid.
Now let's wait until tomorrow morning to see what the bourse floor reaction will be after a wild Friday night of nothing.

Wei, that is so beautiful and true! Almost like poetry! Nice chatting with you at the show. Charmy's husband is in our thoughts. Hope to see her in November!

So true
Better safe than sorry. Those who are set up with inventory have a different perspective than walking the floor folks and I think it was very smart of The promotor to get people out early Fri rather than putting than out at 6pm. We have been through a day after day of terrible world events.
