GTG: 1944-S Jefferson Nickel

This one is an older, smaller ANACS slab. I apologize about not getting a clearer close-up of the steps. How would you grade it?

    68

Edit: I don't do nickels so I'll leave the FS or not designation to others!

The overall strike is pretty soft but the steps are a toss up. There appear to be tiny bridges that should preclude the FS designation but they could be from the photo and actually be full in hand. The surfaces are very clean and the luster is good. I am not crazy about the eye appeal or the strike and I think this coin gets no higher than MS66 by PCGS. My experience with ANACS small white holders is that they were pretty conservative as well. I am going to guess MS66, no full steps.

ANACS were pretty liberal with the steps, so I am going to say 66 5 Steps.

Photos don't show intense lustre, which is why I'm going to say MS65 non-FS.
    When in doubt, don't.

66FS but I believe it would 5fs at PCGS due to the spotting in different places. Softer strike (hair detail), but few contact marks. Nice coin!! Shag

ANACS was harsh on the numerical grade with Jeffs in the old days- FS was a little more forgiving - 65 and FS is my estimate as to the ANACS grade

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • The luster looks subdued so I will grade it MS65. If the luster pours off the coin in hand, I can see MS66. I vote no on the full step designation.

I think back them it did real good getting MS64FS.

  • Thanks for all of the grades. Here is the ANACS grade:

I think it has an outside chance at crossing to MS65FS at PCGS. I only paid about $30 for it so I am planning on including it with my next crossover submission. These really jump up in value at 65FS and 66FS so I think it is worth the gamble. I'll share my results here.
