Interesting ebay encounter regarding a 1911-d quarter eagle

I was the underbidder on the following item last night:

It is a 1911-d strong d quarter eagle graded au55. To keep this on track with the topic of coins, there are some relatively easy ways to positively identify a 1911-d as being real. On many but not all specimens, you may find a wire rim on the obverse. A diagnostic that is present on all is a short raised vertical die polish line directly to the left of the tip of the arrowheads (You may need to tilt the coin to see it). Finally, there is also scalloping on the reverse on the top of the coin. Anyway, onto my story....
Immediately after the listing ended I received the following message from the seller:
SORRY YOU DID NOT GET THE COIN BUT YOUR BID WAS WELL BELOW THE VALUE OF THE RARE 1911 D. I ASSUME YOU WANTED IT LOW TO RESELL. I WANTED TO FIND A BIDDER THAT WANTED IT TO COLLECT AND NOT MAKE A PROFIT AT MY EXPENSE.

I replied with:
Actually my bid was quite fair. Heritage auctions (the largest coin auction house in the world) has sold their last 3 via auction for 5031.25, 4887.50, and 4456.25. As you can see, my bid was higher than 2, and not much lower than the 1.
My reply was not really meant to bicker, just to inform. I personally believe this was a case of shill bidding, since the item was relisted at a higher price nearly immediately (and due to the above comments).
Fast forward to this morning and I received the following from the seller:
I DON'T FALL FOR YOUR FACTS. YOUR OFFER WAS WAY LOW. YOU BEING A VENDER KNOW THIS. I WOULD ASSUME YOU GO TO PCGS AND NGC TO GET COIN VALUES OFF THEIR WEBSITES. NGC SAYS THE COIN IS WORTH $1840.00 AND PCGS,ON THEIR SITE PUT A PRICE ON IT OF $6150 AND THEY STATE IF IT HAS A VERY STRONG D,AND IT DOES, IT HAS A VALUE OF $6400.00. MY COINS REDBOOK SAYS THE COIN IS WORTH $6620.00 SO I WON'T LET YOU TELL ME WHAT THAT COIN IS WORTH. YOUR THE BUYER, NOT THE SELLER, AND SINCE YOU WANT TO RESELL IT, YOU NEED IT AS LOW IN PRICE AS YOU CAN GET IT. THEN YOU CAN SELL IT FOR $6100 AND MAKE A FAST BUCK ON THIS RARE COIN. I HAVE LOOKED AT HERITAGE FOR MONTHS TRYING TO DECIDE WHAT IS A FAIR PRICE AND HAVE NOT SEEN A SINGLE 1911D INDIAN HEAD FOR SALE. SO I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT YOU WANT TO TELL ME AND I BELIEVE YOU AND LOWER THE PRICE TO ROCK BOTTOM TO GET YOUR FAIR OFFER. I HAD AN OFFER BEHIND THE BIDDING SCENE OF $5900.00. SO DON'T TELL YOUR OFFER IS ROCK SOLID FAIR. I HAD OFFERS STOMP ON YOURS. HEY, WHEN I BUY A COIN, I BID IN THE BASEMENT TO GET A STEAL ON THE PRICE OF A WINNER RARE COIN. YOUR NAME POPPED UP FROM EBAY, TELLING ME YOU WERE A SECOND CHANCE CANDIDATE, BUT NO WAY ON YOUR OFFER. I WILL KEEP THE COIN AT THE OFFERS I SAW AND DOWN THE ROAD IT WILL BE FAR MORE VALUE TO SELL. I WIN,IF I KEEP MY HEAD AND NOT CAVE IN TO WHAT YOU THINK IS A FAIR PRICE. EVERYONE THINKS THEY HAVE A GOOD OFFER BUT, IF THIS WERE THEIR COIN THEY WOULD NEVER SELL IT THIS LOW. THEY WOULD LOOK UP THE VALUE IN MAGAZINES AND THEN GO FROM THERE, NOT WHAT SOMEONE TELLS THEM IS A GOOD OFFER AND TO SELL IT TO THEM.
I chose not to respond, as I really don't feel like engaging this kind of behavior.
A couple hours later I get a follow up to the above rant. The seller said:
I had a great idea,if you can get one on Heritage,do it!!let me know when you find one,if you do.Why are you futsing with me when you could get one so cheap on Heritage.I absolutely will not sell mine that cheap,I know what this coin is with a "D" so large.Why should I put this in the lot with the ones selling so low on Heritage.You forgot to mention something very important when bids are that low.You forgot to say coins that cheap, have been harshly cleaned,have some damage,but is graded as Genuine and no MS number.Or a very weak "D".So I do not focus on being in the ball park cost wise with those type of coins.That is why they are so cheap,"PERIOD".I see these low price coins for sale on ebay,but again,a harshly cleaned coin deserves a low price.nobody wants them!I had lots of emails over this coin,people fearful that this coin is screwed up or something.They said,(NOT YOU),the coin is worth the price,if it is flawless,and it is flawless.So bid on the cheapies and get what you pay for.Where are the ones on heritage? I've looked there for months and have not seen one.So what are you talking about? don't bluff me,you did not tell me the whole story on those coins.You have prices on those coins,well I have been looking for one on Heritage since last fall and have not seen any of these coins for sale.if you bidded fairly that way on Heritage,why do you still not have one??it's because they don't have any for sale.look up pcgs price guide.your offer fair? I am not looking for one, but recently sold mine in PCGS-58 becuase their are so many, not a rare coin in the slightest. Just costly

Why don't you tell eBay exactly that?

BTW, once an auction is over the "Report this" link on the auction page disappears. So use THIS LINK to report it.
Although I already sent a report I always think that the more that do the better the chance of getting an action out of eBay. So I would suggest others report it too.

"his offer behind" is likely his shill bid.
Shill bidding is hardly criminal. It is just a hidden reserve price that is against ebay rules. But not against any law.

While it can be entertaining, once its obvious they will not take my offer (show or online) then the conversation is over and its time for them to move on. Like an encyclopedia they will try to cite all kinds of auction houses, dealers, websites, grading and eye appeal characteristics in order to convince you of their case.
