Thanks to Dave Wnuck at CRO, I was able to purchase the book at a reasonable price.
Excellent read, starting with the early history of California followed by several chapters on how the early settlers got there (overland vs around the Horn vs via Central America).
The best part (for me) was the discussion of private gold issues. Bowers has a way of making the history come alive so that one can understand why private gold issues were needed, in what sequence they appeared (and disappeared) and the politics/motivations behind the success or failure of the private issues. Each key year has it's own chapter with a handy summary of events at the end of each of these chapters. Good for future reference when things get foggy.......
I'll have to admit, I only skimmed the chapter listing each and every ingot in detail!
In summary, a great book, well worth reading if you have the time (over 1000 pages - it will put your legs to sleep if you're not careful).

"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose, Cardinal.

Plan to semi-retire in the Folsom Lake area in a decade or so.
It's great country.
I should add these to my library.
