Selling Mercury Dime Set advice/help???

fcloudfcloud Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭
I have finally made the decision to sell off my Number One Complete Mercury Dime Variety set (no band set with many FB coins). I welcome opinions on the best way to do it. Most of the coins are pedigreed A. R. Savino which could be a problem for some and a plus for others.

Ebay

Send it off to one of the auction houses (which is best)
Offer them as individuals or as a complete set?

Here is a link to the set...

I was thinking about this exact scenario this morning while biking 25 miles this morning.

If you want to max-out the value of each coin, selling individually to collectors who need/want certain coins in their
collection makes the most sense. Those collectors likely have a strong demand for the piece(s) and will likely pay
accordingly. To me, auctions don't always make the most sense, especially if there are a lot of less than desirable
pieces...in this case though that doesn't seem to be much of an issue.

If you aren't in a hurry to raise cash, then selling individually over a period of time makes the most sense to me.
If you know your market, which I imagine you would know that, then advertise to those individuals. The BST would
    be a good start.

You should work your individual contacts and BST first and foremost. This will avoid the 15-17.5% etc fees everywhere. You know the value of most of your coins pretty well. If you need further advice on the value of an item you can ask me or others around here. Good photos plus good knowledge and you should be able to sell most of your stuff without FEES. There are a few pieces you might want to put on eBay to maximize profit though...set a healthy reserve on those items and you might get more than you expected....in those cases I would run the auction for 30 days so you get the most exposure....while hyping the stuff on the BST once per day.

You are aware of the items that I already have an interest in. image

Although it will really suck to see your set go! It will really suck to see 20% of the variety collecting community dry up as well. I hope with some of the ground work you have put out there, I will be able to carry things just a little further and maybe we can grow the interest in Merc Varieties over the next couple of years...at least that's my hope.

The market for selling the complete set would be very thin, if not non-existent. Your best bet would be to use the BST board first, and I believe you could sell many there. Better photos would help prospective buyers. I would try e-Bay next, and then perhaps a venue like Teletrade or Great Collections. Then, if there are any left, send them to HA or SB.

No advice, just congrats. Congratulations on finishing the set, and then making the tough decision to sell it.

Having sold a complete set several years ago, I know how difficult it is to part with. In my case I was fortunate to have sold my set intact.

I would agree with previous replies that your set would likely be best sold through a couple of different venues, over a period of time. That said, you can always offer it on eBay and BST as a complete set. Then, if it doesn't sell, sell coins individually. And GREAT pics are a must.

if you could get one of those "promotional type of sales at a big show" you'd reap the most i'd think as #1 set is worthy

You should try to negotiate better terms from one of the major auction houses. If your set is something of great interest and value, I'm sure they'll work with you.

Set a date for an auction, say 3-4 weeks from now. Promote the auction on your website and in your forum sig-line. Send a personal email to each individual in the top 20 PCGS and top 20 NGC Registry sets. Many, if not most, will have exposed their email addresses hoping to hear about upgrades. Then let 'em rip.

If there are too many coins to handle at one time you could set up for 2 or 3 weeks of auctions in a row.

If you don't need the money, I would wait until the economy improves (and additional collectors, now sitting on the sidelines, return to active collecting) before selling. The BST is probably your best bet in terms of maximizing your return, but many common issues may not sell at anywhere near the prices you want.

No doubt in my mind---BST with a one week run and a BIN price with a make offer provision, because remember if you sell it in any of
the popular venues, the fees have become exhorbitant. Now if you feel you have coins that would spark bidding wars due to their quality
and rarity, then offer them on the BST with a 10 day Bid with a reserve. At the end of 10 days decide how to sell the remaining coins. At
least with the BST their are no fees and you will know most of the buyers. Offer them with free shipping and or free paypal, priced accordingly
and let the buyer decide which they want--free shipping of payment via paypal.
Best of luck. A shame I have just spent the last 10 days buying 28 mercury dimes 1919 up.

Thanks for the comments. Some coins are now listed on the BST board. Other will be added. For coins not yet listed feel free to make offers on coins in my set.

I think long term members , especially you guys who are truly collectors should get a free pass to keep your wares at the top of the BST, and dealers (including me) should yield to this thinking for the benefit of the members as well as for our own benefit for inventory.

I might get shot for that thinking but I am one of the people, who happens to stand by the people and who will always be for the people....even on the other side of the counter.
