1000 Coins 200 Countries / States == Giveaway Winners Announced

I've reached two milestones with my World Coin Type Set ... 1000 coins, and 200 countries / states ... so it's time for a giveaway.

Up for grabs are a few duplicates / extras
- 1902 Belgium 10 Centimes PCGS MS64
- 1976 Iran Rial PCGS MS66
- 1966 Vatican City 5 Lire PCGS MS67

All I ask is for some feedback on my set. Tell me what you like, what you hate, or what you'd do differently. Comment on the overall content, or pick a coin and tell me something I might not know about it. Anything, as long as it's more than "Hey, enter me in your giveaway".

Two things I do know:
1. I'm all over the map (literally).
2. I need to post photos. Maybe I'll get around to it in 2015.

The giveaway will be random, with 3 names picked from the list of replies. Pick #1 will get to choose from the 3 coins, Pick #2 will get to choose from the 2 remaining, and Pick #3 will get what's left.

Thanks for looking.

I like how it's "all over the map". You have built a collection that is truly representative of the world over the last 150 years (give or take), and not limited yourself to one time period or area. While I can easily see the desire to limit oneself to one small aspect- that's not for me. I prefer quantity to quality...but it seems like you have both.

The only thing I would do differently (besides photos) is to go with all circulation issues, or all proofs, and not mix them. That may be my OCD showing, however image (rolling specimans in with proofs, here, and prooflike I don't seperate out, just a really nice buisness strike in my eyes)

I might, also, try to spread it back a little farther- I know you have older stuff in the collection, but the majority is from the last 150 years or so. I personally think that ancients and basically anything pre-1800 is pretty darn interesting, and if I could afford it, I'd be chasing them all day long...and keep up the more modern collection as well...but what do I know, as 95% of my collection is post-WWII! (lol)

  • Wow what a spectacular collection. I always dreamed of getting a coin from every country in the Krause catolog. You are well on the way to that. This is my favorite type of collection because it is kinda of random. You see a great looking coin (and from the pictures you do have, you have a great eye!) and you buy it. I look forward to 2015 to see the rest. Great collection!! Mark

Like what you have done here. I was never into world coins until the past few months. Lord M kind of got me started with English Crowns and a few other things. I have been looking high and low for an MS-65 Churchill Crown to no avail and I look at your set and there is one big as day. Now that impressed me. I like that for the U.S. you are going with the State Quarters. Overall a very impressive set. Keep at it.

Great collection you have there! Especially that pop 1 MS68 1944 Canadian nickel that I now realize is probably your avatar.

I really like how most if not all of the coins are very high grades. That is a lot of different coins to own while not slacking in quality on any of them.

I also like that it is all over the map. My own collection is eclectic as well. I buy the coins with designs that I like.

Only thing I might suggest is to start going after at least one coin from each country that you don't currently have a coin from. This is a goal I've set for myself recently to keep my "fun" world coin purchases a bit in check and to give that particular component of my collection some focus. I've limited myself to circulation coins, as I don't generally like to have proofs and NCLT into the mix. But it looks like you don't mind that, which may be a good thing as there are a number of places that only strike proofs/NCLT in their own name.

  • That is a fantastic collection and anyone would be proud to own it!!

You have so many coins from so many countries, have you considered doing continental sets? You could break of a few coins to do an Africa, Europe, Asia, etc. Just a small idea.

Paul, I saw it the other day, by clicking on your sig, and I was stunned ! Such a huge number of coins with such a stunning quality on each and every one, with the vast majority of the coins (if not all) truly PQ for their top grade is an accomplishment beyond words. This gives a whole new meaning to the popular "one from each country" theme. image

Perhaps a few more images would help us all to see what a discerning collector really means. imageimage

    Needs more pictures! image

I have a world collection in far more modest grades.
There are some beauties you might consider adding:
    - Something from from pre-communist China, like a nice Dragon Dollar or a Yuan Shikai dollar
    - You don't have anything from Latvia. These are among my favorites
    - You don't have anything from zanzibar. The Pysa's are neat coins, but they're often corroded
    - Tibeten Tangas are interesting coins. You don't have any from there
    - How about a Hawaiian coin? These are really cool.

That’s for the positive feedback. It's been a fun set to put together, and I have no intentions of slowing down. There are just too many interesting designs and possibilities.

Bill … circulation strikes and proofs … I had considered that when I first started this set. I was originally a collector of Canadian nickels, and had a mix of the four different strikes: Business, Proof, Specimen, and Prooflike. So, that's the direction I took.

Bill … not separating Prooflike … The Prooflikes from the various countries I have listed are different strikes. The Franklin Mint PL coins (Belize, Jamaica) are very different from the MS and PR coins, and can easily be distinguished. The differences in the Canadian PLs are a bit more subtle, but in a side by side comparison, the differences are very evident. And, this thread convinced me that British Maundy coins are a different type, and PCGS now calls these PL.

Bill … last 150 years … That's mainly due to availability and cost. I do have a handful of German State and Swiss Canton coins from the 1700s, and am always looking for more.

Mark / Pokerman … getting a coin from every country … Ya, if I could only stick with just one image Hitting every country / state is one of the goals.

Ron … MS-65 Churchill Crown … Bought that one from board member ajaan a couple years ago. I'm not particularly attached to it (or any other coin), so we can talk about a trade if you are interested.

Pokerman … MS68 1944 Canadian nickel … That was the highlight of my Canadian nickel collection, and it's still a favorite. My avatar is my specimen example of the same year (SP67).

Nunfa0 … continental sets … hadn't thought of that. I think I prefer it all together. Maybe someday, it will be referred to as a "Hoard".

Dimitri / baddspellar … more pictures … I know, I know. My interest is there, just not enough time and too many other priorities.

    Baddspellar … coin suggestions …
    - I really like the pre-communist China designs, but early Chinese coins have become quite expensive. I should have bought a few years ago, though I feel many of us think that way.
    - Also really like the Latvian 5 Lati you linked. I'll keep my eyes open.
    - I haven't seen any Zanzibar coins that meet my MS65 or higher criteria. It would be nice to get a coin from a Z country.
    - You made me open up Krause to look at the Tibet coins. They seem similar to the coins from Nepal, which would make sense.
    - I've always liked the Hawaiian quarter, so maybe I'll pick up one next time I stumble across one. I also intend to acquire some California Fractional Gold at some point.

You wanted opinions. 40 or 50 years from now this will be a fantastic collection. Right now to me, it looks like a collection of plastic with a lot of very common coins in very high grade. Just not enough not so common.

I collected most of the world by date and mintmark 50 to 40 years ago. There were no slabs or 3rd party graders and condition was not my thing unless two or more were available, then price was more important, i.e. value to me. No books to tell me what was rare until a couple of years later when Harris authored one. Some common coins back then have become much more wanted by collectors. I would imagine the demand of 40 years from now will be different and will probably benefit you. History repeats itself, right?

There are so many catalogs chock full of information available to you. I guess I would suggest you try to get some scarcer coins in your far-reaching collection. There are scores to choose from. 64 or better probably won't exist in most scarcer coins but a top pop in any grade is still a top pop. You have hit a plateau, now for the next one. Jmo, Dave.

Impressive collection. I see you only collect MS65 and above. You might consider adding Myanmar/Burma coins which are missing from your collection (and are affordable) in MS65 graded. You might also go for Indian states like Gwailor where the MS65 coins are still affordable and priced less than $50 slabbed. I used to do a OFEC raw collection in UNC but currently inactive.
  • I tend to agree with holedandcreative...it's a very nice set, but many of the coins are more or less easily found, while some are uncommon, but rare is rare. I like your German States collection alone, and would die to have it, but I would challenge you to reach back further, for any country, and try to obtain MS65 or above coins from prior to 1700. That in itself would be a real challenge!

You don't have to enter me into the giveaway, just wanted to say that you've built a very impressive set. That MS65 5 Centavos from Mexico must be quite a little gem.

    mkman / CollectorBob / Roman … thanks.

Dave … I truly appreciate your feedback. Yes, it is a lot of plastic. I am one of the people that probably wouldn't have collecting in the pre-TPG days. Not only do I like the consistent look of slabbed coins, I also feel that slabs are excellent for long term storage. Maybe even for the next 40 years image

As for common vs scarce coins … I guess I am more excited by the coin designs than knowing how many other examples are out there. I don't play the top pop game, I just set a cutoff of MS65 as I like nice looking uncirculated examples. Though, it is more fun to find a scarce German State or Swiss Canton coin than it is to find a modern proof, so I see where you are coming from.

As for the next 40 years … only time will tell. One recent purchase is a 1977 Djibouti 2 Franc Essai, with a mintage of 1700. Survival rate on these is quite high, and collector interest is low, so the coin was very inexpensive. The survival rate will fall, but I can't envision a case where collector interest goes up enough to tip demand over supply. In 40 years, I will likely have nothing more than pride of ownership.

koincollect … The collection is nowhere near complete, so adding new countries / states are only a matter of time. I'll keep my eyes open for Myanmar/Burma and Gwailor. I do like the look of Indian State coins, and have another Kutch 1/2 Kori on the way.

tewcd … MS65 coins prior to 1700? Yes, that is a challenge. I two types so far, one in NGC plastic. Let's see how many more I have when the set reaches 2000 coins.
