I have not tried the mineral oil as I really don't have much copper, but I also wondered based on earlier posts, if acetone would strip the oil without affecting color. I would be reluctant to wipe the oil away.
I know this is an old thread, but I was working on getting some gunk off an old Papal medal and remembered this thread. In case anyone is faced with a coin/token/medal that might need some safe restoration and/or conservation. Just remember to not pick away at the piece with anything harder than a softened tooth pick or rose thorn.
