PMD or possible error?????

toyz4geotoyz4geo Posts: 1,506 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hi all,
I was rediscovering some of the stuff I had picked up over the past few years and came across this Buffalo nickel.
Any thoughts how the hole in his head might have come about?
I remember someone had suggested it might have been hit with a punch, but it seems that kind of PMD would bend the coin or show up on the reverse of the coin...especially to go as deep as this hole goes.
Is it possible for this to have had a round lamination type error wherein the plug fell out after being struck?
At any rate, I think it is kinda neat.
Any thoughts?

    strike through?

does the area at the bottom of the small circle look like anything?
the edges look odd for a punch

The bottom of the crater is flat, except for the little gouge in the center. The sides are tapered toward the bottom, but not evenly tapered.

Can't be 100% sure on this, but to me, it looks like a lamination flaw that peeled out after being struck. The hinge of the peel looks to be around the 9 O'clock position, peeling off from the opposite direction.

Appears to be a strike through. If it were a lamination I would expect the sides of the crater to be more tapered but it could be a lamination which is not unusual on this series.

It could be either one, although I would lean toward a strike through... Cheers, RickO

    Drill bit.
