Ooops. Didn't know this happened many years ago. Apparently the treasure has been returned to spain?

A court ruled in Spain's favor, but not sure when the treasure will be returned to them.

what would happen if they did that? who has possession of the treasure or was it impounded?

Apparently the treasure will be picked up by US federal marshal's today and trucked to McDill AFB for flights back to Spain.

Yeah but when will lawyers for the Mayans etc sue the peruvians now?

This is one case I'd like to see the lawyers suck up all 500 million and leave spain with 1 finger.

Seriously, the Mayans should get it! Just cause Spain stole it and put their crest on the metal doesn't mean it belongs to them!

Whatever happened to the International laws regarding salvage? I would think that 200 years or so of benign neglect and loss should have put the treasure beyond the reach of the Spanish government. But then I forget the Spain is almost broke and this should go a long way towards helping them pay their debts. I do feel that the recovery team is due something from Spain for the time and effort they put forth to bring the treasure to the surface.

The remaining question now is who is on the hook for the storage fees for this treasure while it was haggled over in court. Surely to the winner should be left the bill and not the recovery team. After all the storage and impoundment was done at the direction of the court system at the request of the Spanish government. But I forget myself, the American government was backing the Spanish play and the American taxpayer is going to most likely be paying the bill for the storage fees and transportation charges from Sarasota to MacDill not to mention the bill for the US military to protect Spanish gold.

I feel that the rule of American law was subverted again by TPTB. Don't forget that most of the European wealth was due to the theft of it from their colonial property. The only ones who can't partake of the plunder is American companies.

The thing here is that the ship was a naval vessel and protected from salvagers by international treaty (so people don't steal military secrets and the like from US ships that sink). Fair? No.
