Feb. 5th 1870 Newspaper: First Carson City Coin Minted

Just got in this original "Daily Alta California"
newspaper, from Saturday Morning, Feb. 5, 1870.
On the front page, 7th Column it says:
Carson
Carson City, February 4th
The first coin was issued from the United States
Branch Mint in this city, yesterday evening.
It is in full operation, but coining only silver dollars,
per special order of H.F. Rice; about seven hundred
will be coined for pocket pieces.
Breen says they were released February 10th;
so it appears they were struck the evening of
Feb. 3rd. ( mintage: 11,758 as per Guidebook)

That's pretty cool. Would be interesting to find a pedigreed pocket piece from that minting.

Also, I do believe my CC dollar that was a presentation to my Great Grand parents from Abe was one of the very first minted and
if you can believe Abe it was the very first. Speculation without Abe's confirmation and I have never been able to find where he
made notes or kept a diary. Perhaps someday we'll find such information.

i know there was an earthquake early in c.c. mints history and the guy who driving the whole project feared the worse as he ran to see if the mint survived
twas a great lil city to live in...even had an ol railroad roundhouse 2 blocks away

This website is very interesting, it has most of the early California newspapers scanned and searchable, though the search feature doesn't always work that well.
