Feb. 5th 1870 Newspaper: First Carson City Coin Minted
Just got in this original "Daily Alta California"
newspaper, from Saturday Morning, Feb. 5, 1870.
On the front page, 7th Column it says:
Carson
Carson City, February 4th
The first coin was issued from the United States
Branch Mint in this city, yesterday evening.
It is in full operation, but coining only silver dollars,
per special order of H.F. Rice; about seven hundred
will be coined for pocket pieces.
Breen says they were released February 10th;
so it appears they were struck the evening of
Feb. 3rd. ( mintage: 11,758 as per Guidebook)
Thought you'd find it interesting.........

"...coined for pocket pieces."
That's pretty cool. Would be interesting to find a pedigreed pocket piece from that minting.
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.
I 'loosely collect' Mint memorabilia.
I have a pretty good 'accumulation'
of stuff that I guess I'll sell one day
when I'm either real bored, or real old.
(I'm old, but not quite 'real old')

I didn't want to bid it up and felt there would be a lot of buyers for that paper. I guess that was waaaaaaaay wrong! One
bid and it was yours!!
Greg, thanks for the heads up.
Also, I do believe my CC dollar that was a presentation to my Great Grand parents from Abe was one of the very first minted and
if you can believe Abe it was the very first. Speculation without Abe's confirmation and I have never been able to find where he
made notes or kept a diary. Perhaps someday we'll find such information.

PS if anyone wants a free brochure on my CC dollar feel free to PM me your address and I'll shoot one out. (not spam, not for sale)
This is an interesting thread.
Is there more in the published passage than that one short paragraph that Fred Weinberg cited in the lead post?
Finest Known Carson City Gold Coin

[quote=RWB]Here’s a photo of the demolition of the rear extension to the Carson Mint. (No coin collectors were injured during the demolition process.)

This website is very interesting, it has most of the early California newspapers scanned and searchable, though the search feature doesn't always work that well.
