Unreal Toning

Ok need an opinion. This coin looks soooo unreal lol. I did the checks to make sure it was not reslabbed etc. and it was from a respected seller but still looks fake. Is this even possible? In the middle of the front there is no toning, the shine on the right is just the sunlight reflection (sorry took bad shot) but the color toning on this is toooo perfect. Anyways co-worker who got me into coins showed me this recent purchase he made and we were wondering what the PCGS boards thinks.

I have seen PCGS, et. al. both reject and accept that exact toning. So, a submission is a crap shoot.

    Cheers,

    Bob
  • Looks totally artificial to me. But then I'm biased. I think most colored toning out there is artificial.

    Jacob
  • However it was created, it was deemed market acceptable at the time it was submitted.

Time and time again ASE's are subjected to this.

There are toning breaks...........................just like a Morgan.
There is a line or band.............................just like a Morgan.
There is the correct color progression......just like a Morgan.

    On and on and on..........

Granted there are AT ASE's out the re just as there are AT Morgans and other coins

Here is my ASE with a line in itimage

  • These were sent across the street and came back Detailed. Cracked and sent to our host came back these grades
to which I feel are correct. ASEs tone in a different way than any other silver coin.

I'd have to agree with the guys ATS, the first one looks "enhanced" to me.

Looks natural to me - as long as you consider "natural" to mean that the owner took no steps to protect the coin from toning. Morgans toned the same way. In bags, in drawers, in albums - but no one calls those AT because the owners didn't encapsulate them in air-tight holders. Leave a 99.999% silver coin out on a desk for 5 years and 100 of 100 will tone. 5 of 100 might be very appealing.

If you like it, that's what matters.

I believe the OP coin to be market acceptable, pure silver tones much faster and easier than 90% silver.

So if you just leave an ASE in a wood desk it will tone rather quickly compared to 90%, but that doesn't mean the coin would tone vivid rainbow colors. I don't understand the premiums for toned ASE's IMO.

.999 silver bullion coins can tone more radically than 90% silver coins. ASEs will naturally tone in true Jerry Garcia colors.image

ASEs are one area of numismatics in which I prefer blast-white, untoned coins over any heavily toned example. I just can't shake the feeling that any deeply toned ASE was deliberately placed in a sulfur-rich environment to generate color and make a profit for the person who did it.

i'd really enjoy seeing coins like these in a shield holder

  • Since I was the original seller on ebay let me state....the coin in hand looks like thousands of others I have seen in NGC and PCGS holders. It doesn't look any more natural or unnatural then any of the other super rainbow toned ASE's floating around for the past decade. It all has to do with storage and the pure silver content. Obviously this coin hasn't been sitting in a cointain in an inert environment which would normally prevent toning but we can't automatically assume that some one put this in a hot plate with garlic and onions either image

Here are the accurate images from the auction....the color was quite nice and I found the coin above average in terms of eye appeal image

I love toners, but for some reason I have never liked the look of any toned ASEs. They might mostly be market acceptable, but not my cup of tea.

I liked them blast white as well, when I first started collecting them. Then, after a few years, and hundreds of SAEs (many slabbed, many more raw), I got really tired of what looked the exact same except for the date. At that point, I started to appreciate the ones that had started toning in the albums/after market holders, or when people posted the PCI toned examples.

Now, I appreciate the toned (NT) original looking pieces more.

Love the PCI toning on that 2nd '86 image
Has anyone else noticed the different surfaces over the years on these?
They tone slightly differently from it as well, from what I have seen.

Hi Shane, I watched that auction and agree your images, without seeing it in hand are more like it would look.
Its a beautiful coin with outstanding toning....the winner was lucky I didn't have the dough or it would have been mineimage

Thanks everyone for your feedback! My coworker and I are especially impressed Kryptonite you recognized it right away and commented on it. My coworker is the one who won the coin (he got me into coin collecting). Hey if you are reading this (you probably are) JOIN THE PCGS FORUMS! lol. You have a great collection of coins, I'm always impressed by your selections.

Anyways, adding Kryptonite to my favorite sellers. The coin looks great!
