Seller Etiquette Question

I am currently selling a large portion of my collection and have a question regarding when a coin should be held for a potential buyer. Specifically, if someone asks to see a pic of a coin and takes 2 days to pull the trigger, I think they run the risk of loosing it to another buyer. However, it seems to me I should allow a certain amount of time for a potential buyer to get the emailed pics before offering it to the next person that PM'd or emailed me about the coin. Is there a standard expectation for this? I am interested in your thoughts.

I would PM the first stateing there is another interested buyer, that you'd like a response by a certain time, or you will move on. I find that some potential buyers on the BST do not get back to you in a timely fashion.

I notice you're a fairly new poster. Be prepared to provide references or accept full fee paypal so there is some recourse for the buyer.

    Good luck on your sales.

Details to all transactions should be spelled upfront. If someone wants an image then you have the right to tell them that they have all the time in the world to make up their mind, but at the same time they risk having the coin sold to someone else who pulls the trigger first. There is nothing wrong with that stipulation.

  • Thanks for the response. I know several people on the boards that I have bought from, but I've never really been a seller here. I've let Rare Coins of New Hampshire sell my duplicates in the past via their ebay account. But my contact there has moved on. I'll investigate paypal on Monday.

RCNH is a great coin dealer and very fair... I would try to reestablish contact and continue to use them if you can. Cheers, RickO

In my mind, asking for a photo does not place the coin on hold. That is the policy of numerous dealers that I patronize, as well.

my terms when I sell is: payment confirms the sale. If a seller can not make prompt payment like within a few hours the item goes to someone who can. I always post images and a very specific description and offer a return for any reason within 10 days. I do not even respond to anyone who backs out of a deal or is not responsive if I do hold an item for a short time. As stated set your terms in advance and deal with serious buyers only. Slow payers or people who back out are not worthy of any future consideration.

First person with a PM that says "I will take it" (notice...not a counter offer or change in offer)....by PM gets the coin. Period.

State up front who pays shipping and WHAT shipping will include - insurance, certified, tracking or delivery confirmation, etc, etc. State what country(s) you will ship too. Be clear, be concise, and keep your wits about you. People WILL try to take advantage of the seller to save a dollar.

I put the following in all my BST posts: "The first person to commit gets the coin".

I had the same issues, previously. Replies like "I'm interested" and "I want it if..." don't cut it.

Bingo - I sell many coins sight unseen, (and generally not even posted - working with established forum members, etc.). If I run a listing and don't have that particular coin photographed, and a potential buyer is interested, I will try and get something in the next day or so....but make it clear upfront that if I get firm buy offer sight unseen in the interim, then it's sold. I will make exceptions for established customers, of course.

  • Well as a buyer, I figure buy now or lose the opportunity. I will ask a Q on occasion, but if the answer doesn't make me want to buy, then I won't answer. On the other hand, when on eBay I mostly do buy it now transactions. Once I make a deal, I stick to it.. But that's just me.
