Love the design of all, except the halves! Despite that, I do have some nice circ examples of them.

When I first started collecting, I really didn't like the designs at all. For some reason, Liberty just looked funny to me. As time has passed, I've become more and more interested in the series to the point where I joined the Liberty Seated Collectors Club this year. This was a great decision, I have been loving the articles published by some really, really knowledgable folks in the Gobrecht Journal. Part of what makes the series interesting to me is all of the research that has gone on and the education one can have basically for free if you look around.

I do. My one complaint about it is that 95% of what is available is comprised of about 5 dates. Bust coinage is easier to find

Personally, I tend to like the renaissance designs from the 1910/1920s era best, US classic / bust period second, Barber perior third, and Seated era last. It's growing on me, but not as quickly as the Bust series.

Well, OK, moderns are actually last but they're so far down on the list they don't really reigister on my radar.

I did think it was pretty cool when I happened upon a nice VF 1843 seated quarter in a 90% scrap box.

Newbie collector here. I started collecting in 2005, beginning with modern coins. This past year, however, I gained enough confidence to branch into classic coins. Being picky about size, I chose to collect halves and focused my attention on the Seated Liberty and Barber design. In the end, the Seated Liberty design won out because of my preference for allegorical Liberty designs. I love taking the halves out to view, and haven't looked back since.

Point taken, although the Barber design is also an allegory of Liberty.

Seated coins are okay, but they are not at the top of my list. As type collector I get "type coin fatigue" when I hit the 1873-4 "with arrows" coins.

As for Seated coins in general, the series hit a high at the beginning with this piece and never got any better.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I'm sorry to say, but my Dad passed away in 2008 having just turning 91 yrs of age.
He was sharp as a tack almost right up to the end - and I know he'd embellish what
I can vaguely remember of the story.

    My Dad was in the 84th Infantry, 19th AAA Group / Anti Aircraft / Field Artillery;
he was in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge, and was part of the mop-up group
that pushed the Germans back across the border.

The Germans retreated to a point that the Group my Dad was with decided it was
safe enough to get in out of the Winter snow and locate a Head Quarters inside
Germany - not far from the Belgian Ardennes Forest.

The biggest structure for miles around was this enormous Schloss hidden in the forest.
My Dad was a Master Sgt - [ 3 up & 3 down as he used to say ] and he and his fellow
soldiers took over the castle - and my Dad decided which room would be the best one
for his use. This room was already set up as an office - so it was outfitted with this Gothic
    style desk.

The desk was all hand carved - with spires and make shift gargoiles - he said it had to be
ten foot tall and eight foot wide. The upper part of the desk had doors - all hiding compartments.
All the drawers and doors were locked. [ so that the Americans wouldn't use the desk...LOL ]

No problem, he used his bayonette and popped all the locks - and in the highest part of the
desk - there was a door - which he pried open. It was filled with all sorts of Nazi medals
[ Having the Most Sons in Service of the Fuhrer / Having the Most blah, blah, blah . ]
He ended throwing away most of the medals that had a Swatsicka - and among all of these
old German medals - there was this tiny coin that said UNITED STATES of AMERICA. & HALF DIME.
He was very intrigued about it - thinking that "why, that's worth a Nickel - and I could get an
ice cream cone at Kelly's Landing in Southie with that when I get back home". He tucked it into his
wallet and forgot about it, I guess, for a long time.

After the war, he was in charge of repatrioting US servicemen back to the States. The embarqation
spot for the European Theatre was Antwerp, Belgium. As fate would have it, he was in need of a
secretary who spoke English, German, French and the local language, Flemish [ ancient Dutch ].
The gal he hired turned out to be my Mom. They were married in February, 1946 in Antwerp and
were together until my Mom passed in November, 2005. He was devoted to her and she, him.

When I was a boy of 13, my Dad gave me the Half Dime - and I kept in in a 2x2 - and after he passed,
I decided to have it holdered. Its a great rememberance of one of the nicest guys anyone would like
to have known. He was my best friend - and I his. He was more enthusiastic about my newps than I was.
He'd spend hours pouring over auction catalogs and highlighting things he thought I would like.

I use to have to keep him in check, because his tastes were getting very expensive. I wish he had lived
to be the same age as his Grandfather, who passed a month before his 100th birthday !

Thanks for asking about the background of my favorite Seated Coin !

I do indeed love Seated coins, in all their variations.

Dimes that were creatively "vandalized" happen to be some of my favorites at the moment.

But I like 'em all. image

Edit to add: wow. It's kinda hard to top the "German Castle" half dime story. Cool.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

Seated coins are my main area of collecting activity, and they have been since about 2005. I have finished my sets of half dimes and quarters, and I am 50%+ finished with half dollars. I only own a couple of dollars and dimes for Type purposes.
