Remember any Colorful Characters from here and eBay?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,621 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was thinking of a seller who used to post her name of "Doops" (or something close to that...). Very aggressive with his eBay auctions where he would defend to the death his ability to grade raw Cameo coins. (I don't think he is any longer with us, sadly.)
There was also, "Cameleon Coins" (again, or close to that) out of Texas along with "Texas Bullion Traders" who dealt with incredibly toned coins and posted here along with 'bstevens' (mullet head!).

What dealers do you recall out of your rolodex of memories that were sort of malcontents or at least controversial?
I'd love to hear some stories!

Ah, yes TBT and TBT junior. Guess they went back to their day jobs. They were a hoot though.

If I recall correctly, TBT had a severe health issue with someone in his family and left the industry to concentrate on care.

^Tom, that is sad to hear.

I remember reading the departure thread Supercoins (Tad) ended with. I truly enjoyed his banter and way about him.
No one knew Ike dollars like that guy and his enthusiasm was contagious.

    Yes, Doops was a trip!

Boom was another one. He and Doops seemed to share some personality quirks. Maybe Boom is still posting? Forgive me if he is. But I don't recall seeing him around for quite some time.

I remember Oreville from the old eBay boards, but he followed me here shortly after my arrival in the fall of 2001.

I remember "*smedley*", and "buster44" and "pennywise" (or was it "pennywise123?" I forget the exact handles, but remember the folks.) Also from eBay.

Not that these folks were controversial or anything that I can recall. *smedley* had a sort of rapier wit, like our own Russ.

Remember GoldCoinLover here? And who can forget old Cammie? Both had their share of controversies in their time, but also their lovable qualities.

Aaah, yes. Gmarguli. I've stumbled across his eBay auctions and even sent him a PM ATS. Met him in person at a FUN show once but he didn't talk to me. I never could read the guy and tell if he hated my guts or was just the strong silent type. Has become quite the uber Darkside dealer on the Bay, though.

I think I may have made purchases from stinkinlincoln and waterzooey after they were shown the door from here.

Who was it that had discovered the Speared Bison? I remember her posts had the little rose icon within it.
I got kind of swooped up in that emotional affair and found myself purchasing a couple of them.

To get PCGS to designate the coin was pure marketing genius!

Her name was "neptune", and I got into many a heated argument with her about those Speared Bison nickels. She disappeared not long after she sold her last example, to the surprise of absolutely nobody.

There was someone else whom I liked even less than her, haven't seen him in a while (since he retired to sail the seven seas) and frankly I'm reluctant to say his name lest I summon him. The term "colorful" applied to both him and his coins.

OMG! I will agree that she played that well, but she was a shrew and a witch in PMs if you disagreed with anything at all. No attacks necessary, just disagree.

So far, I remember all the names given...but, in your OP, you should correct it to JBStevens (you missed the "J").

I also remember when Tad called it quits and I wish I had been more into the stuff he was selling off as, looking back, there were some good deals on nice coins. I did get one of the shrunken coins from back then....still have it image

Btw...it was "Chameleon Coins". Martin was an interesting character....both here and on ebay.....

Jbstevens was a good guy in person...he used to share tables with Greg Allen many years ago I believe? I bought a killer Phoenix fire red toned Washington quarter for him off Ebay for like $180 and this was for a common date in MS66 so that was moon money but it was a nice coin image

I remember there was a female that posted here for a short time and that she was looking for a boy friend here. She didn't last long before she got banned.

I wonder how many of these banned forumites are still here under a different identity?

No but she posted some pics of herself and she wasn't bad looking for a middle age woman. I think that's what finally got her banned.

I watched JB show an obvious AT raw coin to a couple of kids and their dad at FUN '05. I was at the corner of the table looking at stuff, hadn't introduced myself as a board member yet, and chose not to after watching that. Not only did he show it to them, and not say anything other than how nice the toning was, he also sold it to them without any disclosure. Sure, there is AT/NT/and MA, but this was blatant AT and not MA. Disgusted me. I may not like AT coins but if the price is around bullion and I know going in what it is, I may buy it if I like the look. In this case, the kids and their dad knew almost nothing about toned coins from what I saw/heard, and I found the sale, and the way he handled it, to be uncool, imho.

For Chameleon Coins, unless the spelling diffrence is on purpose, it was "Martin" and not "Marlon" as I bought a few from him and the "playing around" on one of the pics was so grossly exaggerated, we went back and forth in emails. The coin wasn't less than $50 so it wasn't worth the extra screwing around and paying postage back, etc, and I was supposed to get a discount on my next purchase, but I flat out stopped any future purchases with him (on the boards or on ebay).

He stopped selling on ebay after some paypal issues that likely arose from NASD issues (speculation on my part, but logical given the issues). He was a "nice guy" but compromised himself with his ethics, imho.

Another colorful character who hasn't posted much in awhile (a few posts lately) is HomeRunHall image
(look at those shirts and tell me his isn't colorful! image )

I do not remember her forum name, but I do remember HER.

She showed up on the forum one day and posted many posts during the short time that she participated on the forums. In her posts she told about her background [she was involved one way or another in the industry referred to as the "world's oldest profession"]; how she decided to become a coin collector; and how she was devoting all of her energy into the hobby.

Her postings were high energy, almost manic. Also quite interesting to read [her ability to write well was limited].

She appeared like a meteor, streaking across the forum sky and burning brightly. Then just as quickly as she appeared, she vanished. Never to be heard of again.

I just finished FaceTime with gmarguli. We were talking about grapes. Yes, grapes. Go figure.

Wasn't jbstevens the guy who claimed he didn't know what 'done deal' means?

What happened to LucyBop? She was a character, but in a nice way.

Edited to add: gmarguli still blames me for his bamming.

Oh, yes, Rick Kay! I mentioned the incident to my Mom when it occurred. My Mom, who is an immigrant from China, knew what 'done deal' meant and she did not believe a lawyer could not know that term.
