Would you support MLK on a U.S. Coin?

There is currently a treasury bond for MLK, but everything is going electronic.

How would you feel about Dr. Martin Luther King on a U.S. Coin?

I prefer not to have actual people on coins. If you are going to have people, he's a better choice than a dead president IMO.

NO, I don't want to see any more people on coins........bring back Liberty!!

A commem. would be much more appropriate for MLK.
  • mingotmingot Posts: 1,807 ✭✭✭
    qualified no.

don't want to see people on circulating coinage.

don't want to see more modern commens.

but if they have to keep pumping out all of these new issues, then sure why not.

    I abhor any person depictions.
Liberty should always portray or image.

Depends on the composition of the medal. In palladium ? Most likely.

excuse me : I meant "metal".
  • I could definitely see it happening. The government opened the door for political activists on coins by using SBA, and if a push for another coin design bearing a political activist is made, I can't think of anyone (off the top of my head) that would be in line ahead of him.

As for whether or not I would support it, I too would like to see US coins resume an allegorical theme as opposed to historical figures. But if I were required to pick an activist to be depicted on a circulating US coin, I think MLK would be a very fitting option.

coin -- I get to use some latitude: 1. you mentioned bonds and 2. you didn't specify circulating

I am 100% certain there will be a commemorative coin.

As far as circulating coins, I don't know which group's feelings they'd hurt by removing an obverse image to replace it with ANYONE elses.

Commemorative-one year issue - yes- but not on a regular coin. Then again, I am not in favor of anyone on regular coins. Once you get him there you will never be able to get him off--Just like our current coins.

His reasonalbe message has been hijacked by those who have turned it upside down. His image on a coin would just remind me of what his movement has become since everyone ignores what it was.

I think a commemmorative would be more appropriate. I'm surprised it was not done already. I wonder if he was on any of the proposed Georgia quarter designs.

    Totally agree.
There is so much junk on commemmoratives.
MLK absolutely should be on such a coin.
He deserves the national holiday and he deserves to be on a gold commemmorative IMHO.

No, I would support a commemorative coin. I agree about getting liberty back on the coins.

  • No.

I hate seeing any person on any of our circulating US coinage.......one of the reasons why I don't collect coins post 1909. If we must put a new person on a US coin, I believe that Reagan should be ahead of MLK.
  • No, I'm tired of all the PC garbage on our coinage nowadays. Bring back Liberty. Probably won't happen though since Liberty is dead.

When we run out of presidents, I could see MLK as part of a "great americans" series for our non-circulating golden dollars.

  • A tastefully designed commemmorative. Little chance of it being non-political.

    Absolutly yes. More appropriate than:
Duke Ellington, Jackie Robinson, Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver and Crispus Attucks.

...and much more appropriate than the traitorous confederates Lee and Jackson.

I'd love a MLK commemorative set and wouldn't mind a one-year circulating commemorative, perhaps to mark an end of the JFK program. In general, I agree with those who would prefer more classic themes instead of dead presidents. I deeply admire all of the currently-used presidents, but I think series should end at some point.

I think it makes good sense to update our coinage. Let's change the designs on the dollar (Sac) and half dollar coins to include Reagan and a major black figure. However, I would rather see Frederick Douglass on the coin rather than MLK. I think we already have enough MLK stuff - a federal holiday, major monument in DC, etc.

Commem yes, circulating coin no. If the mint can put a baseball player on a coin (Jackie Robinson), they can put MLK on a coin.

It is clear that the majority of respondants are saying:'No".
So why do they feel this way?:
Is it because they are opposed to having people on coins? (Some said so!)
Are thise who are opposed to real people with the exception of presidents?
Is it because they are opposed to political activists ( At least one person suggested this).
Does the feeling against real people on coins extend to not wishing presidents on coins also?
Are those opposed to real people on coins include non-presidents such as famous fathers of the country (Benjamen Franklin)
Is the opposition to MLK on a coin a politically based statement?
Is the theoretical opposition to MLK on a coin part of a racial bias?
The presentation of the question is interesting. In order to sort out the feelings of the members, one would have to back into the question in a series of questions as described above.
Since this touches on sensitive points, I would not recommend the US Coin Forun be the venue for these in depth insights into our core beliefs and predjudices.
My personal opinion is similar to some respondants.
I believe that MLK is more deserving of being honored on a Commemerative Coin or Coin set than many of the prior honorees and are pretty certain that this will come to pass.
I prefer that regular coinage use allegorical figures as symbols.

A commem seems appropriate and an overhaul of the designs of circulating coins is equally worthy of the most serious consideration

Its interesting how many patterns were more attractive than the coins that were selected-

No - the annual Federal holiday is sufficient. Stamps are the suitable venue to honor citizens.

I'm not joining facebook just to see your page.

I'm MLK'd out. The posthumous honor and acclaim accorded to MLK now vs. what I remember of MLK back in the day is out of whack, IMO.

So I'll give it a no.

Someone please explain to me why we have one day to celebrate the lives of Washington and Lincoln(Presidents' Day) and MLK has his own day. If it wasn't for Lincoln, no one would have ever heard of MLK. I don't want Reagan on a ciculating coin, either. Back to LIBERTY for me!!

Agree with the many that say a commemorative would be most appropriate.
  • Even though he deserves to be on a commen, I don't want that to happen either as his GREEDY family will charge taxpayers for the honor. The family was paid $800,000 as a fee to allow the country to honor the man by erecting a huge statue. MLK would not be pleased with his family or how his movement has been hijacked if he were here today.

    No.

We've already experienced what can occur when "movements" influence what can appear on coins or a commemorative nature (commemorating non-existent events?) and I'd hate to see that occur again. There was a reason that the commemorative half dollar program was stopped due to abuse. I'd prefer depictions of LIBERTY instead of continuing to put real folks, dead or alive, on US Coins.

Just say no to more dead presidents and public figures! Otherwise we might end up with Justin Bieber or Lady GaGa Coins!
