Would you support MLK on a U.S. Coin?
There is currently a treasury bond for MLK, but everything is going electronic.
How would you feel about Dr. Martin Luther King on a U.S. Coin?

A commem. would be much more appropriate for MLK.
don't want to see people on circulating coinage.
don't want to see more modern commens.
but if they have to keep pumping out all of these new issues, then sure why not.
Liberty should always portray or image.
excuse me : I meant "metal".

As for whether or not I would support it, I too would like to see US coins resume an allegorical theme as opposed to historical figures. But if I were required to pick an activist to be depicted on a circulating US coin, I think MLK would be a very fitting option.
I am 100% certain there will be a commemorative coin.
As far as circulating coins, I don't know which group's feelings they'd hurt by removing an obverse image to replace it with ANYONE elses.

I think a commemmorative would be more appropriate. I'm surprised it was not done already. I wonder if he was on any of the proposed Georgia quarter designs.

Totally agree.
There is so much junk on commemmoratives.
MLK absolutely should be on such a coin.
He deserves the national holiday and he deserves to be on a gold commemmorative IMHO.
He hijacked and almost destroyed a movement.
A movement which then declared war on the US govt a decade later
And its remanents put obummer and his inability in power.
While across the bay in oakland they seem to like selling crack out in the open.
His intentions were good, His results werent.

I hate seeing any person on any of our circulating US coinage.......one of the reasons why I don't collect coins post 1909. If we must put a new person on a US coin, I believe that Reagan should be ahead of MLK.
Duke Ellington, Jackie Robinson, Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver and Crispus Attucks.
...and much more appropriate than the traitorous confederates Lee and Jackson.

So why do they feel this way?:
Is it because they are opposed to having people on coins? (Some said so!)
Are thise who are opposed to real people with the exception of presidents?
Is it because they are opposed to political activists ( At least one person suggested this).
Does the feeling against real people on coins extend to not wishing presidents on coins also?
Are those opposed to real people on coins include non-presidents such as famous fathers of the country (Benjamen Franklin)
Is the opposition to MLK on a coin a politically based statement?
Is the theoretical opposition to MLK on a coin part of a racial bias?
The presentation of the question is interesting. In order to sort out the feelings of the members, one would have to back into the question in a series of questions as described above.
Since this touches on sensitive points, I would not recommend the US Coin Forun be the venue for these in depth insights into our core beliefs and predjudices.
My personal opinion is similar to some respondants.
I believe that MLK is more deserving of being honored on a Commemerative Coin or Coin set than many of the prior honorees and are pretty certain that this will come to pass.
I prefer that regular coinage use allegorical figures as symbols.
Its interesting how many patterns were more attractive than the coins that were selected-

I'm MLK'd out. The posthumous honor and acclaim accorded to MLK now vs. what I remember of MLK back in the day is out of whack, IMO.
So I'll give it a no.
Someone please explain to me why we have one day to celebrate the lives of Washington and Lincoln(Presidents' Day) and MLK has his own day. If it wasn't for Lincoln, no one would have ever heard of MLK. I don't want Reagan on a ciculating coin, either. Back to LIBERTY for me!!

<< <i>Absolutely not. >>
We've already experienced what can occur when "movements" influence what can appear on coins or a commemorative nature (commemorating non-existent events?) and I'd hate to see that occur again. There was a reason that the commemorative half dollar program was stopped due to abuse. I'd prefer depictions of LIBERTY instead of continuing to put real folks, dead or alive, on US Coins.
Just say no to more dead presidents and public figures! Otherwise we might end up with Justin Bieber or Lady GaGa Coins!
