The Saint that returned to Saint Louis (Update: Two more make it back)

RYKRYK Posts: 35,789 ✭✭✭✭✭
While perusing Legend's recent post-Long Beach offerings, I could not resist the 1916-S Saint. The coin was previously in a well-known St. Louis-based collection. The prior owner, who is a fellow physician and very private about his holdings, sold his Saint collection to Legend, who used numerous coins to seed Simpson Saint collection. Over time, many of these have been replaced. Simpson recently upgraded his 1916-S, so this coin was made available, and I was more than happy to bring it back to St. Louis. The coin has exquisite original color, with a copper streak on the reverse and other areas of more subtle coppery tone. The eye appeal is off the charts.

Gorgeous! I love the deep, rich color.

If it's not stickered, it should be.

Very nice, RYK. I'm glad that you were able to "repatriate" the 1916-S. I've also been known to pull the trigger on a pretty Saint every now and then.

You could show the coin to the statue of St. Louis in Forest Park, by way of re-acquainting it with St. Louis. Establish more provinance, so to speak....image

I'm a fan of copper spots for some reason. Nice color on the coin.

There is a rumor that Longacre may make an appearance in St. Louis in the spring for his nephew's graduation from Washington U., so long as his advance team can make the proper security preparations. I don't know if that town can handle both him and a 1916-S Saint.

Nice coin RYK. Love that you know the pedigree and the previous owner.

Why do so many doctors collect gold and saints?

I have just bought my first few saints, common dates, in MS 65.

Must be some funny light effect because "LI" are no different than "BERTY" in hand.

When I worked for a dealer in the early 1980's, we acquired a small hoard of 20-25 1916-S Saints. They all had gorgeous orange peel surfaces,as Ryk's coin appears to have. I sure wish I'd bought one for myself! Love that look!

No, I am still a Dirty Gold Man. image I do have a small collection of Saints and buy them when I think they are good value or otherwise special. As far as I am concerned, these Crawford Saints are unimprovable. He bought many of his coins before the advent of third party grading. You can certainly buy higher grade coins, but I am not sure that you can any that are noticeably nicer, IMO.
