<< <i>And the people you meet, on vacation are another great part of traveling! This is Lou, the owner of a company that makes custom LCD screens. I spent a week on a sailboat with him. Nicest guy you could ever want to meet!

Every boat I saw out there had some model-quality 24 year old sunning herself on the deck, looking like she just stepped off of a movie set. Well, every boat but the one I was on.

Rationally, vacations make no sense at all. But we're humans, not robots! It's like thinking it's a waste of time to stop and help and old lady across the street, too, 'cause there's nothing she can do for you in return.

I pick the dream vacation (another trip to West Africa as a celebrated musician), because I won't be able to afford the coin of my dreams (the "ice cream specimen" 1894-S dime, the McDermott/Bebee 1913 nickel, or perhaps one of the best known 1802 half dimes).
If someone offered to give me one or the other, this would be easier. I'd choose the coin, sell it, take my dream vacation, and buy lots of nice coins with the remainder.
OK, I reread the original question: "assuming both cost the same". I still vote for the dream vacation. I can always sell my soul and work for an insurance company if I really want to be able to afford a $10,000 coin.
"Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity" - Hanlon's Razor
I'm still not sure that coin collecting is anywhere near as practical as it's argued here. I would take the vacation, because I already have some dreamy coins (some of them from Adrian and Brandon, yes) and I've gotta strike a balance. Besides, the photos I shoot on vacations also last a lifetime... and could conceivably be sold as well.
My kids are grown with families of their own, and I've already done my share of travelling and seeing a good portion of the world. I'd take the coin. As has been stated, I can always sell the coin if need be.
Having done a couple more vacations since then I still have to say vacation! I was able to go to London and check out old coin presses and medival gold coins in the museums there. My idea of a dream coin would cost more money than I could leave at home so I'd have to go to the bank just to stare at it alone.
"I'll split the atom! I am the fifth dimension! I am the eighth wonder of the world!" -Gef the talking mongoose.
Well, my dream coin would be a 1907 Ultra high relief and since those are super spendy, I'd go with vacation. Heck, for that much money, I could get into space!! Not many people can do that... Now that's a vacation

I'll take Tom's coin.

No if, buts, or doubts about it. The vacation. In 1982, I was in Botswana and Zambia for five weeks, looking at wildlife and camping outdoors in game parks. To me, that's worth far more than any coin one ever made in any condition.
If I can come up with the funds, I can always buy a really nice coin which makes me happy. But as I get older, there are fewer vacation options available to me.

I don't understand those that picked a vacation? Why not pick a 7 figure coin, sell it, retire, and then go on a hundred vacations? This is a no brainer, guys.

wait, is the question, someone is giving my my choice for free and I'm to choose my gift, or is the question, it's my money that I already have, and how am I going to spend it?
I guess, either way, it doesn't matter: sell the one "dream" thing and distribute the funds among regular, non-dream coins, vacations, cars, electronics, art, investments, home improvements, clothes, dinners out, concerts, etc etc.
I forgot about this thread. What a coincidence it's revived now where earlier today I visited my local B&M shop and picked up a 1901 Proof $2 1/2 Gold PCGS graded. I won't be vacationing for a while.

I'll take the coin every time - the vacations are too fleeting........

It's really hard to compare the two I think. Most vacations - even nice ones are a couple grand. We could all easily find a great dream coin for $10-60k. No way can you match a vacation to that unless it's 6 month 5 star.

I could easily match a vacation to the coin above and have memories of it forever.

My dream vacation is to go metal detecting in Carson City and dig up an 1873-CC No Arrows quarter, so I will take both the vacation and coin, thank you very much.
I'd like to believe that the coin of my dreams would earn a substantial enough gain after acquisition to be able to sell it after enjoying it and use the gain to take the dream vacation. Having cake and eating it.
Without a doubt the coin... I've been very fortunate to have traveled to over a half dozen different countries in the last five years and I've honestly had my fill of it. My wife is borderline obsessed with traveling though (and speaks multiple languages) so unfortunately travel will be a large percentage of our budget every year until the kiddies finally arrive. I've probably explored more of Europe than I have the US so hopefully one year soon we'll take a month off and just travel here in the states.
My dream vacation is to time travel back to 1905 and visit banks in San Francisco and Carson City. Thus, I get my dream vacation and some nice coins for cheap!
<< <i>Vacations last about a week, coin can last for years. >>
Memories can last a lifetime though! I've seen, with my own eyes:
The Antikythera Mechanism, the Rosetta Stone, The Acropolis, the greater Mexican pyramids, the collection of jewels at the Tower of London, the Isle of Man, the theatre where Lincoln was killed, chimpanzees that I got to interact with, kangaroos bouncing across Australia, Alaskan glaciers... I know these aren't for everyone but vacation doesn't mean relaxing in a hotel near a beach or being on a cruise ship for weeks on end.
"I'll split the atom! I am the fifth dimension! I am the eighth wonder of the world!" -Gef the talking mongoose.
Why not both? Last year I did the road trip to Vancouver up the California / Oregon / Washington Coast, boarded a cruiseliner and spent the next 7 days en route to Anchorage. When I returned, I called my dealer only to find that a coin I had been after for years was available. It was a stretch, but I bought it. It's my avatar.
I would love to visit the Vatican and see the Sistine Chapel and the Raphael rooms and the Vatican Museum. I'd also like to see some of the great art museums in France and also the Palace of Versailles. Yup, 2 weeks touring Italy and then 2 weeks in France would be awesome, and then maybe a stop on the way back in Egypt to see the Great Pyramids of Giza and a boat tour up the Nile from Luxor to Alexandria. Those would be memories to last a lifetime, who needs another silly coin.
For all of those of you that say a vacation is just a memory with no resale, I would like to point out everyone's life simply boils down to memories with no resale but that is not to say they are not without value..... Well most of you at least.....
I just got back from 3 weeks in SE Asia. Island hopping around Indonesia and Australia, up close with exotic wildlife, visiting old gold and silver mining towns, diving at the Great Barrier Reef. Life is short. All we leave are memories.
Much as I love coins periodic vacations are a must. Lance.
I would take the vacation, for sure. Starting in Capetown, I'd drive north to the Kalahari, then west into Namibia, up through Etosha, then east into Botswana for a spell in the Delta, then north to Chobe and Victoria Falls, then two or three weeks on the Zambezi River fishing and game watching, up through Zambia and across to Lake Malawi, then across to southern Tanzania and the Selous, then north into the Serengeti, then head back south through Tanzania and into Mozambique, work my way down the coast of Moz fishing, relaxing and dining on prawns, then back into South Africa for a spell in the Kruger Park and some of the Kwa-Zulu parks, then finish up in the Cape wine country. A grand circle of sub-Saharan Africa - maybe 4 or 5 months in all, two vehicles would be ideal. I've done virtually all of the legs in parts (with the exception of southern Tanzania and Moz), but never the whole thing at once. That's my dream trip!
For my second choice dream vacation, I'd settle for being marooned on some tropical island with Penelope Cruz (don't tell my wife!!!)

Even more interesting than the subject matter of
these old threads is seeing people who are no
longer around and wondering what happened to
them.
For instance, what happened to Coxe and garsmith?
Did they get bammed??

Never again.

Coins are nice but ultimately just physical "stuff". Vacations, even bad ones, give us experiences we grow from & create lasting memories.
so, I guess I like dreck vacations!
