Guess the Grade....1918-D Buffalo newp

toyz4geotoyz4geo Posts: 1,505 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hi all,
I just picked this up today, and would like to get a general concensus on the grade.

Let me say this:
1. It is holdered in one of the top 3 TPGers slabs.
2. It is holdered as a partial collar misaligned dies. (That probably gives away the TPGer.)
3. I am not a Buffalo person per se, nor an error collector per se but this seemed interesting.
4. To my eyes, it seemed undergraded....I will list the grade and pic of the slab later tonight.

If the pics aren't a help, I can retry them. I did an auto adjust on the 'puter and it seemed too dark, so these are what I have under 4 75 watt Reveals with no adjustment.
Thanks,
George

It's not AU from what I can tell. Where's the "plateau" on the Buffalo's upper leg due to rub? But I can see why some would believe AU because.....

....based on the photo there really is no luster and is rather lifeless. So I'd probably go MS62 barring any improvement in the photos.

BTW, the reason for the better strike is probably due to the off-center/misaligned dies...in fact, I'm almost sure that is the case.

Mint state and mark free, only the muted luster would keep it from a 65.

Thanks for the input. The coin actually has pretty good luster imo, and is pretty white per Broadstrucks edited pics..thanks again. My eyes just asid it seemed undergraded. Now I need to decide if it is worth sending to our hosts and get their opinion on a crossover, knowing there is the extra hit for the error.....hmmmmmm

THAT COIN IS FAR SUPERIOR TO A 62...... Give it a acetone bath and then send it in to PCGS... I believe you have a possible MS65.

Ramarkable (!) strike for an 18-D. 62 is crazy, unless there are hairlines or something else unseen in the photos.

Unless there are hairlines or the coin is lacking all luster I would say the coin is better than a 62.

That coin looks as good as any 18-D I've ever seen in any grade. The surfaces are clean and the strike is amazing. In fact, I've never seen an 18-D with a strike this nice.
