What are your thoughts on this NEWP? 32 S Washie.

I'm not sure what to make of it and I have it in hand. Just a couple of quick shots before work. It has nice color, but the broken toning makes it difficult to evaluate the surfaces. If I had to offer a grade, I would probably lean toward MS63 or possibly AU58. What do you think?

That looks MS and well detailed to me! You have it in hand, but it looks well-detailed under the toning. Great acquisition.

No, it's just a bit of haze that camera really picked up on. I've seen it on other unmessed early Washingtons. I have a 34P in PCGS67 that shows a similar characteristic and I know it was there when it graded, because I sent it in raw.

I like it! I'm a fan of multicolored crackle toning.

Can't get a feel for luster (and thus grade) due to your angled pics, but if you say AU/63, I see nothing to suggest you are incorrect.

I guess I'll politely fall into the i don't care for it camp, as mottled toning of this type has never appealed to me. That said, it won't be improved any with a dip, etc. so it should stay as it is. The toning being an overall negative to me, I think would bump it into AU58 range, or MS61 -- flip a coin.

This coin has pluses and minuses for me.

The pluses are I think that the piece fundamentally is Mint State, possibly as high as MS-64. It certainly looks to be at least MS-63 under the toning, but you know what they say about grading through toning. Sometimes you get a surprise. The surfaces don’t have any serious marks.

The minuses are:

1. I find the toning to be distracting. This is what they call “thin film interference.” Some of it is attractive, but some of it is blotchy.
2. I’m concerned about the greenish stuff across Washington’s curl, the “I” in “LIBERTY” and in back of Washington’s head. It looks a bit like PVC. If comes off and does not leave a hole in the toning, that’s great. If it doesn’t, you have an unsightly mark on the obverse.
3. As another poster said, a lot of collector like these coins to be “white,” preferably “blast white.” Some would find this piece quirky and would tend to avoid it
