Boiler78 - is there any documentation surviving which may suggest that the 1868 Proof set was assembled as a presentation set for international diplomatic purposes during the Reconstruction period, in a fashion similar to those assembled in the 1830's, i.e. King of Siam set?
Thank you for showing us your Pattern Proof set [ again ] I never tire of seeing it. A Newbie asked what this set was, as I remember, its an aluminum set, correct ?
If I'm wrong, please advise. Many thanks again !
Also, if you ever decide to sell your 1870 Half Dollar [OBV is a Barber design ] ... I'd be thrilled to buy it. Its one of the prettiest coins [ regardless of type ] I have ever had the priviledge of viewing.

Well,,, after seeing Boiler's stuff I too have that rusty washer feeling and just can't bring myself to post a coin. I do believe I'd sell a kidney for the J-997 in pr64 btw
I have two. One is a Morgan, and the other is a more obscure US Mint 1976 gold commerative. I also own the one in the lowest grade as well. The total pop in all grades in the the PCGS pop reports is 8. I was the first one to send one in to get graded. That was the one in the lower grade. About two year later I bought a collection and it had one still in the original wooden mint box. I sent it in and it came back PR68. I know it is not a highly collected series, but it sure brings me a lot of pleasure.

I've had a few conditional Pop 1/0 Lincoln's (BN). Here's a newp though. Pop 1/0 MS68. Technically, I guess I could say it's Pop 0/1/0 as there are no 67's graded either.
This Hesse-Darmstadt kreuzer was tied for finest known with one other (pop. 2) when it was in an NGC MS67 holder.
I took a risk cracking it out and sending it to PCGS, but it came back MS67+, so I suppose that makes it finest known at either service. It is definitely pop 1 now.
(There is just the other MS67 at NGC, and last I looked the next best one at PCGS was MS65.)
Not bad for a coin I paid less than a hundred bucks for, I suppose.
As you can see from these old pictures of it in the previous NGC holder, it's very prooflike.

Tremendous coins. I'm partial to the fugio but then I've always been partial to fugios and bar cents.

My POP1 strait out of the 6-coin set. All others in the set were either MS 69 or PR 69. The entire set was later sold.
