Got my confederate brass double eagle's today.

I ordered 2 brass confederate double eagles from Daniel Carr and got them today in the mail.

I must say that the coins are very striking in hand and almost appear to be made of gold as the coloration of the brass is similiar to gold.

I once owned a confederate restrike half dollar in an NGC-64 holder and the reverse that coin had looks identical to these coins save for twenty dol. instead of half dol.

When I bought my 2 coins they were priced at $25, last night I checked and they were $40.
I also was considering purchasing a 2oz. silver barter coin but was to cheap to spend $125 for it, now they are sold out and with a mintage of 50 pieces I kind of wished I'd bought one.

yes the price was $25 each on the $20 confederate it has jumped to $40
the 2oz started at $125 and went to $150
the 4oz started at $300 and went to $375

by the way 10 left on the confederates looks like last chance

own a 2009 Colorado Gold Rush Sesquicentennial "Pioneer Gold",
1 troy oz. .999, satin finish, 12 minted. Purchased from a fellow
forum member. Daniel Carr's work just astounds me !!!

According to Carr's catalog, the coin turn version is limited to overstrikes of actual 1850-1865 type-1 US Mint $20 Liberty gold coins.

Oops - mint error.

Actually, the error is the certificate. The brass coins are supposed to be medal-turn (which they are).
The certificate should have said "medal-turn".

Anybody who wants the correct certificate can request one via PM.

OK, after some research I have concluded "Coin-Turn" is something struck on a real coin and "Medal-Turn" would be an item struck off a blank piece of metal. Is this correct?

No. The terms refer to the alignment of the obverse vs. the reverse.

I was checking out the Dan Carr website this week and noticed this Confederate Double Eagle. I saw it being advertised by saying something like no Confederate Double Eagles were ever produced, but if they were, they'd look like this. It appears that the reverse being used on these pieces is the reverse of the Confederate Half Dollar.

I was reading an old article I have on Confederate coinage recently, "The Untold Story of Confederate Coins" by Ron and Elizabeth Howard which was written in 1990. While it's true that the Confederacy didn't produce any gold coinage of their own design, it appears that they did prepare designs for their own gold coinage (which are an entirely different than the design of the Confederate Half Dollar).

The article states the following regarding the design of the Confederate gold coins:

"... The principal figure, the Goddess of Liberty, seated, holds in her right hand a staff surmounted by the liberty cap; her left arm rests on a shield, and the left hand on the 'Constitution.' On the shield (there being no coat of arms yet adopted) is shown a portion of the flag of the Confederacy, unfurled; to the left of the figure will be observed sugar-cane growing, a bale of cotton, a sugar hogshead, and a bale of tobacco; to the right, cotton in its various stages of growth, as also tobacco. On the reverse side is an endless chain composed of fifteen links; South Carolina, having taken the lead, occupies the top link, and the other links represent, right and left, the other States in the order of their secession; the remaining blank links are an invitation to the border States to hasten to inscribe their names within the circle. The stars of the Confederate State are distinct; those of the border States are in the twilight, but visibile, soon, we hope, to stand out as boldly as their neighbors. In the centre is inscribed the monogram, composed of the letters C.S.A. Twenty dollars has been printed to represent the denomination of the coin. Of course, the design is adaptable to any denomination of coin."

The article says no patterns of this design are known to have survived the War and that the description is all that remains of the Confederate gold coinage. It would have been really neat to see a $20 gold coin made up with this design...

The article also mentions that the Confederate $5 gold coin would have been called the "cavalier," with the $10 being a "double cavalier" and the $20 being a "quadruple cavalier."

They do show up now and then on eBay, but not too often and are sold at a pretty big premium. Mostly all that were originally sold through the MM website remained in permanent collections. The ones that did hit the secondary market were then quickly gobbled up and they seem to have remained in personal collections. I have always stated that the extreme popularity over the piece is that I would consider it to be a crossover collectible. It appeals to coin/token/medal , Civil War/Confederacy, historians and Daniel Carr Collectors..

I hope you can find yourself one reasonably .
