  I was really impressed with image results of the Canon used in this thread by another member which is at the same price point as the Nikon you questioned.

  I'm sure it will be fine, a lot of zoom for a P&S, 36x wow.
  Shooting coins is all about lighting, WB, and backing off the coin to allow the light
  to spread all over the coin. Easier said than done.

  At that price you're into the D-SLR range. Spring for that instead so you can use macro lenses. morgansforever is right on. It's less about the camera than the other elements; but a 100mm macro or longer will get you the best results.

  If the maximum optical zoom is available at the closest non-macro focusing distance of 50 cm, then that's more than enough magnification for decent pictures at a comfortable working distance. The optics of a 36x zoom lens aren't going to be without comporimises, however, especially at the long end.
