What a lady told me today, have receptacle or barf bag handy (coin related)

We are running a barn sale this weekend and one of the vendors was talking about how their house got robbed recently. A mixed bag of items were stolen. She said after that her and the husband got paranoid and decided to take their coins to the bank. I said oh the safe deposit box? and she said no we gave them to the teller, I said what do you mean? she said we just wanted to exchange it for (folding) money, I asked what were the coins and she said dollars and half dollars, I asked who's face were on them and she said she wasnt sure but they were "really old" At that point I started to feel ill but I had to ask, how much are we talking about and she shrugged and said, I dont know, we got over $300 back 
This is a condensed version of the conversation as it was busy but she also stated that the teller at the bank told her the coins were only worth face value
She also said (sigh) they usually take the coins to the hotel buyers.
Biting my tongue as best as I could I asked if they had any coins left and she pointed to a apple box and said about that much. I pretty much begged her that in the future would she please talk to me prior to getting rid of anymore, she said she would.
Sharing this with the board is my first step to recovery and I thank those who have read it, i'm going to the store now to get some Alka-Seltzer.
