Draped Bust Reference Materials

What are some good reference materials for Draped Bust dimes, half dollars, and dollars?

I could only find: Early United States Dimes 1796 - 1837, for dimes.
For halves I have Overton (revised fourth edition).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

There is a book by Jules Reiver on Early Silver Dollars (1794 - 1803). The other two you have already identified.

The book by Davis DJ, Logan RJ, Lovejoy AF, McCloskey JW & Subjack WL, "Early United States
Dimes, 1796 - 1837," is important. It is also expensive.

Two other useful books for Bust halves (but not reeded edge coins):
    1. Peterson GR/The Ultimate Guide to Attributing Bust Half Dollars (2nd Ed.)
    2. Souders EE/Bust Half Fever, 1807 – 1836 (2nd Ed.)

There are also two recent books on Bust quarters---both are really good:
    1. Rea RR, Peterson G, Karoleff BS & Kovach Jr JJ/Early Quarter Dollars of the United
    States Mint, 1796 - 1838
    2. Tompkins SM/Early United States Quarters, 1796 - 1838

You might think that some or all these books are expensive. However, they will pay for themselves if you decide to collect by die varieties.

Ed Price Collection of Draped Bust Dimes is the most complete Die Marriage reference for the series.
Every Draped Bust Dime die marriage is listed and illustrated with large images and ways to ID them
  • Thanks guys.

The first volume of Dave Bowers' book on silver dollars will tell you more than you perhaps will ever want to know about the Bust dollars, but it is out of print and expensive. Years ago I sold the two volume (also covers Morgan, Peace and Trade dollars, Seated and Bust Dollars) soft cover reprint addition for over $400. They are wonderful books, but the price is steep.

The book on Federal Half Dimes is great except for the condition census information. That is sketchy at best.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

There is also another book by Robert Hilt on Early silver and gold.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

Bowers' Silver Dollar Encyclopedia is available here (on the books section) - reading it online isn't the greatest experience, but it's a lot cheaper than buying the book!
