I went to a small Bay Area coin show a couple of years ago. At the entrance to the bourse was a group of Boy Scouts who had a few tables that had been prepared to show a display of coins that the Scouts had put together. A portion of the display consisted of coins found by the Scouts while metal detecting. A few of the coins were found over in San Francisco in some of the city parks. The coins were Seated Liberty coins including either a half dollar or dollar that looked like it was in EF to AU condition.

There are some parts of the greater Bay Area that have neighborhoods [and associated yards, streets, curbs, parks, etc.] that date back to the 1850's and 1860's [some even earlier back to pre gold rush days]. I suspect that there may be a number of older mid 19th century coins located in and around and under the surface of these older neighborhoods just waiting to be discovered and retrieved. However it would not surprise me to find that local governments and maybe even the state have enacted rules which prohibit John Q Public from metal detecting and/or keeping any goodies that are found.

I remember hearing a number of years ago that after a huge winter storm in Monterey removed tons of sand from the local beaches a metal detectorist went out hunting along the waterfront and ended up finding a mid 18th century double eagle.

So if I get a nicer detector, I'm guaranteed to find even more! That's how it works, right...

But seriously, that is really cool.

I think it would be generous to assume $50 per coin. If he found some clever way to market them as a long lost hoard, then maybe $100 each.

At best you're probably looking at an $8000-$15000 hoard. Nothing to sneeze at, but he's certainly not going to be retiring on it.

Very cool vid Wes. To think how many other caches are out there waiting to be discovered.
What is the best bang for the buck regarding detectors? I'm guessing 3-5 hundred for a decent one.

Agreed. My BS detector engaged when he put the Garret hat over the hoard.

    Not sure. Just sayin.

The dude does plug Garrett a bit, but if you look at his other videos you'll see he probably doesn't do anything except treasure hunt all summer in the creeks. Check out his video of his total finds of Summer 2011. Wow.

Not BS.... Detectorists are extremely brand loyal in many cases. On MD boards, arguments frequently ensue over brands. He is surely proud of his find, and likely sent the video to Garrett... they give prizes for these videos. He has several other good finds as well. I, too, am a cache hunter (meaning I do not do parks etc, rather old foundations, walls, houses etc) and look for the 'big finds'. Cheers, RickO

Makes you wonder who put the coins there and what was going on in that time period in the area. Perhaps a robber or pirate? Someone who didn't trust banks? I'm already pricing those detectors in anticipation for the spring!-just wish I could swim better

It's unarguable that finding those old halves and other large silver coins was a great find. It's also unarguable that just about any metal detector would have done the job.

The finder did his homework very well. Be in the right place at the right time helps alot........Eureka! There's probably more to be found at that site.

Those coins were stolen long ago and the robber lost them in the stream while making getaway on his horse?

More likely intentionally buried. The stream is an added security measure. If you bury them on land somewhere, it's easily detectable for months. Bury them in a stream and you'd never be able to tell the next day.

I actually saw this over on Treasurenet earlier this month...I was trying to find an Overton guy to talk to him. Stone already noticed he had a rare and expensive counterstamp in the bunch!

And here I am trolling on auctions, coin shows and eBay. image

It makes one wonder if -

    - the coins were originally cached under a rock ledge in the creek

    - or they were cached under a rock ledge along the creek and the course of the creek changed course since what ~170+ years ago

Thanks guitarwes for the link and the thrill!

I own the Garrett AT. Stands for All Terrain. One of the few water proof detectors. I'm thinking that's why he says he wouldn't be in that water with another detector.
