Whaddya think happened to this Peace eagle's eye? ** Update **

BryceMBryceM Posts: 11,854 ✭✭✭✭✭
I got a new 1928 Peace Dollar in the mail and was doing the requisite amount of inspection and oogling. This coin is in an OGH and is an upgrade to my collection. I was pretty happy with the overall appearance and clarity of the fields and portrait. The strike is decent and luster is great. I think my photography skills are improving too. I don't think this is terribly shabby for a point & shoot. The white balance is still slightly off depsite my attempts to manually correct it:

Then I looked at the eye of the eagle. It sorta looks funny. There aren't any surrounding hits. To me, it looks like it was struck that way. I can't find any VAMs that explain this. I've included a close-up from another 1928 that I have for comparison:

Anyone have a simple explanation for this?

  • It looks as though it was struck by something.

  • doesn't really matter it is a planchet Void or a after mintage hit. I find it very distracting and I would return it asap if you still can.
  • it's a small strike-thru.

Looks like a strikethrough and not a VAM variety.

Some small piece of debris or grease was between the planchet and the reverse die when the piece was struck.

Here is a CC Morgan that was "struck through" a sliver of wood by the 0 in the date.

Looks more like a strike through than PMD IMO.... Cheers, RickO

Thanks everyone. I actually sort of think it's interesting as long as it isn't post mint damage. I'm curious though, how do the TPGs view this sort of thing? Obviously it's in a PCGS holder, so I guess it didn't bother them too much. Does it limit the overall grade, result in a small deduction for reduced eye appeal, or is it given a pass since it's considered a minor mint error?

    Minor update.

I sent this coin on a trip to see the sticker people. They liked it and affixed a green bean. I guess it didn't bother them too much.

What grade is the coin? I guess 65.

Usually strike-throughs detract a little, but they are as-struck, so they don't disqualify it from grading. I think the unusual placement on this coin makes it a bit more interesting. Some may not like it, but I think it's cool.

Congratulations on the CAC sticker... supports the strike through analysis... Cheers, RickO
  • Stick it on Ebay for an outrageous price, call it an error and see if it sells.image

Nice coin! Strikethrough is what first came to mind when I saw it. Amazing in terms of where it came out, right in the eagle's eye. Congrats on the CAC sticker.

This coin is in an OGH holder with an MS64 grade. I've certainly seen worse Peace Dollars in 65 holders. I think it would have a good shot at a plus if re-submitted, but I'm inclined to enjoy it right where it is. If I ever decide to sell it I might give it another look.

Given the price jump from 64 to 65 and the "distorted" Eagle's Eye, I would be surprised if the coin upgraded. Possibly a plus which is not necessarily an "upgrade" per se but definitely not a 65.

Of course, thats just my opinion which only has value to me.
