Even if the info on Ebay is legit, how do we know that NGC even called it authentic?

It only stated "Not Encapsulated....not suitable for certification".

Exactly. If NGC thought it was authentic, they would have put it into a Genuine holder.

Exactly. If NGC thought it was authentic, they would have put it into a Genuine holder.

I agree, but in fairness it does say "Guaranteed Authentic Only" on the label. I think they should get away from using the Details labels as bodybags because of instances like this.

I thought this was the equivalent of our hosts "Questionable Authenticity." Just a bit more vague. I am surprised about the "Genuine" comment on the label. Why wouldn't they slab it if it was Genuine?

I just texted my friend from NGC. The label means the coin is authentic, but it's essentially not holder-able.

I bought something like that on ebay years ago. It was a broadstruck 1945 dime with obverse wheel mark. No grade on the label just the description, and a cert number.

listed as "NGC authentic" but nowhere on the label does NGC say it is authentic. Is this their body bag way of say it is not authentic.

I believe that when you submit for certification you have the option to request whether or not you would like your coins to be holdered in "Details" holders if not gradeable, my guess is this gentlemen declined the holder option so recieved the coin back raw but with the label stating uncertifiable.

Honestly, I'm not sure. It may be what was mentioned above by deansmint, or perhaps it could be that it was simply something NGC didn't feel comfortable putting their name on.

When holdered with a details label you know you have an authentic coin that has other problems. This one leaves one wondering (1) is it authentic and (2) is it even the same coin that was submitted.

The "body bag authentication" is not worth anything in this case. The points you make are valid on both counts. In the "old days" NGC used to mark and item on a check list as to why they would not grade a coin. The piece looks like counterfeit to me, but I can't exactly say why. It just does not look right.

I don't think NGC means "Guaranteed Authentic Only" for this coin. You can see that phase on "Not Genuine" graded coin as well. I give you an example.

theres something there that they dont like. ( i know, no kidding ). i just wish they would use a code or something like pcgs does to help out.

This particular label says both "NOT GENUINE" and "Certified Authentic Only."

Usually this means something active is on the surface of the coin and is active, such as pvc. That is why something like this cannot be put into a holder. It needs to be treated first. This coin looks to have other issues. Possible putty, etc.

Received a package from NGC the other day. Some items were in "Details" holders (UNC details, hairlines, for example), but one was noted "PVC" (or something along those lines) and in a flip.

I don't see any red flags as to authenticity from the pics. My vote as to not gradable is due to whizzed,cleaned,or altered surfaces.

I have had several returned that way from them. Details coin that owner didn't want slabbed or a coin they do not slab are a couple reasons they come back like that....
