    Oh, and 101
  • I don't think I've sounded out on this lengthy thread. The seller can say anything he wants, but it is his responsiblity to get the item to the buyer. Sending anything wrapped as poorly as the seller did in this instance is being irresponsible.

This same thing happened to me over 10 years ago. Both the seller and post office refused to refund my money since I had not requested insurance. It was only $15, but very frustrating none the less. Since then I've been very specific about insurance.

  • UPDATE! - January 20, 2012 (also posted on page 1)

    For those who are interested...

I sent a message to the seller last Jan. 12 and told him to contact the post office and give me a refund.
    Here is what he said:

“i contacted the post office, they do not know what happened. i cannot issue a refund because i do know what happened.
once the package is in the mail, it is out of my control”

My response was that he is responsible for getting the item to his buyer and that he should have made sure that the item
was packed safe and secure. I also told him that I can't blame the post office since he was the one who did the poor packaging
and he should have known that a plain white envelope is not a secure packaging for coins. I also said that I have no fault in this
and I should not be the one paying for his mistake. I requested a refund (again).

It's been one week and I haven’t heard from him. I think he has no intention of contacting me again.

Will I get a refund? Maybe not. But I hope this serves as an eye opener to buyers and sellers. I also hope this doesn't happen to anyone else.
  • You gotta be joking ?

    Hello

sorry to hear that. You mentioned buyers - any advice in that area? Do you plan to ask about shipping in future? I am literally asking - not being &itchy.

If the seller doesn't reply on this very soon, I would take his last communication as his final word and I would do a paypal chargeback. Item was NOT received.

As for asking the seller about shipping methods....depending on what is being shipped, that could be a delicate conversation to have.

As a buyer, I want to trust the sellers and that they know how to ship.

As a seller, if someone asks me, it depends on what I am shipping and what I have handy. If someone starts pressing the matter, as if they are sticking their nose in a little too far and I get bad vibes, I would
just cancel the deal. No harm, no foul. As a collector, not a business, who just flips/sells extras/dupes, I am ok with doing that. I also insure (whether it is self done or through USPS) and do confirmation on what I send.

But, if you are going to ask about the shipping method, be prepared to be taken as someone who is trying to tell the other person how to run their own business and be prepared for any consequences, such as your money back and no item; even if you would have been fine with their shipping method.
There are people on these boards who will block a bidder for asking ANY question on ebay....imagine if you question their shipping method image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • I'd like to believe my seller could withstand a sentence with a question mark without folding. I have never responded to a question from a buyer in that way.

This is patently false. It IS seller's responsibilty until you have item in hand in condition bought.

This is the easiest credit card/paypal claim you could possibly have.

Agree. File an "Item not received" with PayPal and show them the shoddy packaging, attach the seller's email shown above. PayPal will most likely decide in your favor. But do it NOW.

Hey buddy, charge a couple bucks for shipping and buy a padded envelope. You owe the buyer his money back. Chalk it up to one of those life lessons learned and next time don't be such a cheapskate.

I think that most reasonable people would not mind shipping via a particular method at the buyer's request, as long as it isn't something too far out there. I can't imagine someone being so obtuse that they would cancel a sale over shipping their item via priority mail instead of express mail to save a few bucks or vice-versa to get the item faster. And if there are some out there that would take a simple shipping alteration request so personally that they take it as someone telling them how to run their business, well, it would certainly affect my buying decisions in the future.

    Regarding the OP's situation:

Absolutely sellers responsibility unless you explicitly denied insurance. The cost of shipping, even if offered as free shipping unquestionably implies that any costs incurred getting your product to you safely and securely are included in the amount agreed by the purchaser of the product. Sorry this has happened to you man and you are entitled to a full refund from whomever sent those coins to you. He may as well had sent an emptly envelope. Point is, he has your money and you got a torn envelope by way of his poor packaging. His actions directly resulted in the loss of the product you paid him for. His fault. Period. You are entitled to your money back. If you paid via paypal, go ahead and file that chargeback. It was overdue after his first response to you about it. With pictures of the envelope, and the seller not insuring it, your money should be back in your account pretty quick.

I'll have 5 bucks on it was sent as a gift , hence the sellers lofty attitude

Very irresponsible of the seller. Time for a PayPal chargeback.

I'd get requests like that occasionally and always replied that I'd be happy to pack/ship/insure any way the buyer desired, as long as they provided in writing affirmation that they would be accepting responsibility for any problems that arose once I dropped the package off with the shipper.

For some reason, my method of shipping always ended up being sufficient. image
  • I think he is responsible.

I usually cut a bubble mailer to fit inside an envelope and ship the mailer inside the envelope, saves time.
