Based on the photo, I think the coin could be "above average" with some minor problems (including specks of "green dirt" that require additional scrutiny and a peripheral gouge at 1 o'clock on the reverse). It is hard to evaluate the real surface color of the coin as the white holder looks almost beige on my monitor.
I generally hate "weak C's"; they are very easy to buy and very hard to sell.
I don't mind the look of the coin. The obverse seems like it has honest wear. It's probably been wiped at some point.
I am concerned about the reverse, with the rim gouge at 2:00 and the dig at 9:30. The dirt on the reverse looks almost like it's in a horizontal band across the top half, as if a mount could have been skillfully removed from that area.
I'd say 35/40 details, genuine, due to the reverse issues noted.
i am concerned about the ding on the rev. i didn't think about it being a jewelry mount...i hope you are wrong about that...but i see your point. i was hoping, perhaps wishing, that mark is from another coin's rim. could it be?

It may well not be from jewelry. I can't tell from the pic.
I don't think it is from another coin's rim, though.
No CAC sticker for this coin. In fact that cut on the reverse at 1:00 may get that coin in a genuine holder. Pass.

the surface color is dirty orange. i see the white balance is way off in the photo, though the holder isn't that white to begin with. it's in an old ANACS holder.
do you think the gouge is bad enough to make it genuine? (based on solely on the photos of course) at arm's length, the gouge is hardly noticeable. but i am stretching my already very long arm. just kidding.

The grading services have different standards for different coins. Your coin may grade but a modern coin with the same damage would most likely not grade.

you guys have basically confirmed my suspicions when i first saw the coin. i was thinking the c is so weak, that it somewhat takes the appeal of having the c mint mark away from this coin. also, it's the most common variety for this date. the edge gouge bothered me a lot too. i asked the guys there and even they said it might not be graded by pcgs because "they are so conservative." the next day, i kept thinking about it. so, i went back traded some bullion for it, just because I liked the surfaces and color a lot and it's pretty rare afterall. i guess i should have went with my first instincts. oh well.
Acutally, I like the coin in the photo better than I did with the original photos. The color looks pleasing, and I do not mind the gouge on the reverse. Depending on what it cost you, it might be a good exchange/purchase.
Your coin looks a lot better in your second set of pics and the mark on the reverse at 1:00 doesn't too bad in this pic. If it were mine, I'd leave it in the old small sized ANACS slab since I'm more of a collector than an investor.

Since the weak mintmark is a result the mintmark being lightly punched into the die rather than a filled die, it wouldn't bother me too much. The bottom line is this coin was struck at the Charlotte mint which makes it a cool and highly desirable coin. The fact that the surfaces are original and undipped is certainly an added bonus.

I have to agree. I am comfortable with the coin in the ANACS holder, and the color looks much more original in the last pic than in the OP.
I am also on board with the grade.
Nice looking coin.
